Gary Kubiak is a charter member of the Ryan Tannehill fan club.
The Texans coach praised Tannehill before the draft and took the time to do so again during Wednesday?s conference call.
?I think he?s going to be a great player,? said Kubiak, who like Tannehill played quarterback at Texas A&M. ?I?ve been very impressed. There?s no doubt in my mind you?re talking about a franchise player.?
But even franchise players need help to succeed, and Tannehill believes he has some in Anthony Armstrong, claimed off waivers last weekend.
Tannehill has worked with Armstrong for just a few days, but said he likes ?what he sees so far.?
The two connected on a couple of slant routes in practice Wednesday in which Armstrong got separation, caught the ball and turned it into a big play.
Armstrong, meanwhile, is just trying to get his bearings. The former Redskins receiver had just four hours to pack after learning the Dolphins claimed him and has spent the week simply familiarizing himself with the playbook.
?I try to learn the whole thing because it makes it easier to understand it all,? Armstrong said. ?I?m pretty much up to speed with what they?ve given me so far. I?m not going to say I?m 100 percent, but I?m probably pretty high 85-90 percent of what I need to know so far.?
Not tuning in
Nearly a million viewers tune into Hard Knocks every week for insight into how the Dolphins do business. Kubiak just isn?t one of them.
He said Wednesday that he has not had time to watch the series, even if it provides helpful tips on his Week 1 opponent?s strengths and weaknesses.
When asked if he would ever consider doing the show ? many coaches would not ? Kubiak seemed taken aback. He stammered for a few seconds before responding:
?It?s hard to answer because I don?t know,? Kubiak said. ?I?ve never been a part of it.?
Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said he enjoyed the experience and had ?no regrets about doing it whatsoever.?
Quotable
??Offensive lineman Ray Feinga, on rejoining the Dolphins: ?It?s always good to be back. This ain?t my first rodeo with this. I was just grateful to be back and have a job.?
?? Matt Moore, on surviving as the team?s backup quarterback: ?Getting to this point was a little difficult, but we?re here now, we?re moving forward, and I?m moving forward as the backup on this team, and trying to help this team however I can.?
??Philbin, on beating the Texans: ?I told the team we?re going to need a fantastic effort down in Houston. It?s about hard and fast for 60 minutes against this crew we?re going against. ? We?ve got to find a way to win the turnover battle.?
Odds and ends
?? Jabar Gaffney, the veteran wideout who worked out for the Dolphins on Monday, visited the Raiders on Wednesday, Pro Football Talk reported. The Dolphins still have a roster spot to fill after cutting quarterback David Garrard and putting offensive lineman Artis Hicks on injured reserve.
??Linebackers Koa Misi (back) and Jason Trusnik (ankle) were limited in their practice participation, and defensive linemen Tony McDaniel (knee/toes) and Derrick Shelby (shoulder) and wide receiver Brian Hartline (calf) were able to participate fully.
