Teen driver arrested after Nevada crash kills five family members

Jean Soriano, 18, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in a southern Nevada crash that killed five members of a California family and injured the suspect and three other people.

Five members of a Southern California family were killed in southern Nevada when their van was rear-ended by an 18-year-old driver who was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.

The five dead were among seven family members who were in the van, authorities said. The other two ? the 40-year-old female driver and a 15-year-old boy ? were hospitalized in critical condition.

The van was carrying a couple, their children and some aunts and uncles, he said. Killed were three men in their 40s, a teenage female and an adult female.???

Jean Soriano of California was booked into the Clark County Detention Center after he was treated and released at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said.

The crash happened at about 3 a.m. Saturday on Interstate 15 near the Utah line. Soriano's sport utility vehicle struck the van from behind, causing both vehicles to spin out of control and roll near Mesquite, some 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, investigators said.

A 23-year-old passenger in Soriano's SUV was treated at the hospital and released.

Authorities believe Soriano was returning from a visit with family in Utah to his home in California at the time of the wreck, Hixson said. They didn't immediately release his hometown or the names or hometowns of the victims.

Beer bottles were found in the SUV, Hixson said, and troopers performed a blood-alcohol test on Soriano at the hospital. The results won't be known for a couple of weeks, he said.

Hixson said only two of the seven people in the van were wearing seat belts. The five who were not buckled in were ejected, but one survived.

"Unfortunately, so many in the van weren't wearing seat belts, and some might have survived had they been wearing them," Hixson said. "We see it so many times where people can survive simply by having a seat belt on."

Meghan McCain will have a reality show

Meghan McCain is joining the ranks of reality TV stars. The daughter of Arizona senator John McCain will star in and executive-produce 'Raising McCain,' a new docu-talk series that will be part of the initial programming of the new Pivot cable channel, set to debut on Aug. 1.

"Raising McCain" will follow McCain, 28, as she interviews "experts, regular people and members of her generation, exploring the most important and unusual questions of the day, framed by Meghan's experiences in her personal life." The network will air 10 half-hour episodes of the show, which McCain recently described? as "?Meet the Press? meets 'Jackass.'"

?I grew up around journalists, and I came to realize that the best, most valuable moments happened in the green room before the interview and during the shots of whiskey afterwards," McCain said Wednesday at an event to promote the new Pivot network.

The political website The Daily Caller caused a ruckus after it posted an article about the show, along with a cartoon that featured McCain's breasts discussing her new program. McCain voiced her outrage for the cartoon on her Twitter account yesterday. She called out the website for its "offensive" and "sexist" article, and vowed to address these very issues on her upcoming talk show.

The Pivot network will reportedly be available as a pay-TV channel, as well as a broadband-only streaming service. In addition to McCain's show, it will feature five other new programs, including one hosted and co-produced by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt. His show, "HitRECord on TV!" is being described by the network as an "open source variety show."

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Kenya's Supreme Court on Saturday upheld the election of Uhuru Kenyatta as the country's next president and the loser accepted that verdict, ending an election season that riveted the nation with fears of a repeat of the 2007-08 postelection violence.

Jubilant Kenyatta supporters flooded the streets of downtown Nairobi, honking horns, blowing plastic noisemakers and chanting.

But supporters of defeated Prime Minister Raila Odinga angrily protested after the verdict and police fired tear gas at them outside the Supreme Court as well as in the lakeside city of Kisumu, Odinga's hometown.

Two young men participating in riots were fatally shot in Kisumu, police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi told The Associated Press, although it was not clear by whom, and residents there said they could hear gunshots late in the night.

Outbreaks of violence by Odinga supporters were also reported in some Nairobi slums and truckloads of police were called in to quell the demonstrations, according to reports on a police radio heard by an Associated Press reporter.

In a victory speech late Saturday, Kenyatta urged Kenyans to move past the election and pledged to "work with, and serve, all Kenyans without discrimination whatsoever."

"Above all, let us continue to pray for peace in our country," he said.

Odinga, who had challenged the election results, accepted the court ruling and urged national unity and peace.

"It is our view that this court process is another long road in our march toward democracy, for which we have long fought," he said. "The future of Kenya is bright. Let us not allow elections to divide us."

However, Odinga said it was unfortunate that some of his legal team's evidence had been disallowed by the court. This, he said after the court's verdict, means that "in the end Kenyans lost the right to know what indeed happened" in the counting of votes.

"Although we may not agree with some of its findings, and despite all the anomalies we have pointed out, our belief in constitutionalism remains supreme," he said. "Casting doubt on the judgment of the court could lead to higher political and economic uncertainty, and make it more difficult for our country to move forward."

Odinga wished Kenyatta success and said he hopes the incoming government "will have fidelity to our constitution, and implement it to the letter for the betterment of our people."

Saturday's Supreme Court verdict ? following a drawn-out court case that raised tensions across the nation ? means that Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's first president, is to be sworn in as president on April 9. He will become the second sitting president in Africa to face charges at the International Criminal Court.

Kenyatta and Deputy President-elect William Ruto both face charges that they helped orchestrate the 2007-08 postelection violence in which more than 1,000 people died. Both deny the charges. Ruto's trial is set to begin in late May; Kenyatta's is to start in July. Kenyatta has promised to report to The Hague.

Kenyatta's win may complicate the U.S. relationship with Kenya, which has the largest American embassy in Africa. Because of the ICC charges against Kenyatta, the U.S, Britain and other European countries have said they may have limited contact with Kenya's new president.

But Western powers can't completely sever the relationship. Kenya is a key component in the fight against the al-Qaida-linked Somali militant group al-Shabab. Additionally, as East Africa's largest economy, China is strongly courting Kenya's leaders, and the West will be loath to lose economic influence here.

The office of British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose government did not congratulate Kenyatta by name after he was declared the winner, said in a statement that Cameron wrote to Kenyatta on Saturday to note "his strong commitment to the partnership that exists between Kenya and the U.K." The statement said "the Kenyan people had made their sovereign choice" in electing Kenyatta.

The White House congratulated Kenyatta in a statement, which urged Kenyans "to peacefully accept the results of the election."

Lawyers for Odinga, the loser in Kenya's last two elections, had argued before the Supreme Court that the election was marred by irregularities and that Kenyatta did not win enough votes to avoid a runoff election. According to official results, Kenyatta won 50.07 percent of the vote, narrowly avoiding a runoff election against Odinga, who said his case before the Supreme Court would put Kenya's democracy on trial.

But the Supreme Court's unanimous decision, read out by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, said the election was "conducted in compliance with the constitution and the law" and that Kenyatta and Ruto were legally elected.

"It is the decision of the court that (Kenyatta and Ruto) were validly elected," the ruling said. The reasons behind the judges' decision were not given Saturday. The chief justice said a detailed judgment would be delivered within two weeks.

Unlike after the 2007 election, which degenerated into tribe-on-tribe violence that damaged Kenya's reputation as a stable country, this time Odinga said he had faith in the judiciary's ability to give him a fair hearing.

The court's ruling ended days of anxiety since March 9, when Kenyatta was declared the winner of the March 4 vote that many described as the most complex in Kenya's history. More than 12 million Kenyans participated in the election. Some observers had expected a low registration of voters because of apathy following the 2007-08 violence, but campaigns by Kenyatta, Odinga and other presidential candidates led to the highest registration in the country ever. Kenya's electoral commission registered 14.3 million people.

Election day, though, did not go as planned. An electronic voter ID system intended to prevent fraud failed for reasons yet to be explained by the electoral commission. Vote officials instead used manual voter rolls.

After the polls closed, results were to be sent electronically to Nairobi, where officials would quickly tabulate a preliminary vote count in order to maximize transparency after rigging accusations following the 2007 vote. But that system failed, too. Election officials have indicated that computer servers were overloaded but have yet to fully explain the problem.

As the early count system was still being used, election results showed more than 330,000 rejected ballots, an unusually high number. But after the count resumed with the arrival in Nairobi of manual tallies, the number of rejected ballots was greatly reduced, and the election commission said the computer was mistakenly multiplying the number of rejected ballots by a factor of eight.

Odinga's lawyers told the Supreme Court this week that the switch from electronic voter identification to manual voter roll was contrived to allow inflation of Kenyatta's votes to take him past the 50 percent threshold. That accusation was vehemently denied by the electoral commission and Kenyatta's legal team.

Gastrop?ds species are extremely diverse in forms and sizes, ranging from microscopic to large. About 50 species of snails are currently considered to inhabit Skadar Lake, the largest on the Balkan Peninsula. The Bojana River connects the lake with the Adriatic Sea, and the Drin River provides a link with the Ohrid Lake.

Scientists Vladimir Pei? from the University of Montenegro and Peter Gler from the Biodiversity Research Laboratory have recently discovered the new snail species Karucia sublacustrina. The new species inhabits the ancient lake of Skadar that is situated at the border between Montenegro and Albania.

"Ancient lakes are among the most vulnerable and threatened ecosystems, and their faunas are frequently under extreme anthropogenic pressure. The small range of many endemic species living in the Skadar Lake system - together with ever increasing human pressure - make its fauna highly endangered. This becomes even more important in light of ongoing eutrophication, pollution and sand and gravel exploration activities in the lake and its basin. Therefore, knowledge on their inhabitants are of primary importance for timely and efficient conservation and preservation", says the lead author Vladimir Pei?.

These circumstances and the reported decline in endemic gastropod diversity should trigger efforts to save this sensitive lake ecosystem. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species includes 21 endemic species from the Skadar Lake basin. Six of them are assessed as Critically Endangered and nine are listed as Endangered. All this comes to say that being such a valuable biodiversity location, Skadar Lake must be preserved together with its endemic biota.

Elite women's college rejects transgender student, prompts outcry

NORTHAMPTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) - A transgender high school student has had her application to a prestigious all-women's college denied because she is tagged as legally male on government documents, prompting a vocal online and social media campaign on her behalf.

Calliope Wong, 17, a Connecticut senior who was born a male but has identified as female since adolescence, says Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, twice opted not to read her application and returned it in the mail.

Almost all of Wong's paperwork to Smith, including transcripts and references, identifies her as female. But the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, form from the U.S. Department of Education marks her as male, she told Reuters on Thursday.

Smith's admissions office told her the FAFSA designation makes her ineligible, based on Smith's policy that applications and supporting papers consistently reflect that the student is a woman.

Laurie Fenlason, Smith's vice president for public affairs, said the school does not comment on the status or admissibility of individual applicants. But she added, "Every application to Smith is treated on a case-by-case basis, and application materials must reflect female identity."

Smith also has legal concerns over changing its admissions policies, Fenlason said. Schools such as Smith are concerned they could lose federal funding under Title IX, a law that bans sexual discrimination in education but exempts single-sex institutions.

"Title IX is an important factor in our consideration but not the only one," she said. "Smith is focusing on the broader policy challenge of how to be inclusive and supportive of transgender students while being faithful to the mission of a women's college."

Wong's plight has garnered attention since she started to chronicle her experience with Smith on a Tumblr blog last year.

The case at Smith, which has admitted women only since opening in 1875, has triggered heated criticism among the school's often-progressive students and alumni.

Students and graduates have taken to social media sites, including the Facebook groups "Trans women belong at Smith College" and "Smith Q&A," to show support.

An online photo campaign depicts scores of people holding signs calling on Smith to allow transgender and transsexual females.

In Massachusetts and Wong's home state of Connecticut, a transgender person would need to have sex-reassignment surgery to change the legal sex on a birth certificate and thus amend a FAFSA form.

Wong has not undergone the costly reassignment procedure.

Best Buy giving Samsung the Apple treatment with in-store mini-stores

Apple's Best Buy stores

Way back in the year 2011, the big box gadget retailer Best Buy surprised us with the launch of dedicated in-store miniature Apple stores, or if you prefer fancier Apple display sections with dedicated sales staff. The move has worked well for both Best Buy and Apple, offering prospective Apple customers and current Mac and iOS users more than one thousand new spots to go check out and pick up the latest gear from Cupertino.

Clearly no longer content playing second fiddle to Apple, Samsung's partnering with Best Buy to do the same, launching before the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4 at the end of April. According to Geek.com, Best Buy's high traffic stores will be getting the Samsung mini-stores, with staff being told to start clearing out two aisles worth of space next to the popular in-store mobile departments.

Apparently there will be "large Samsung signage" and demonstration stations to show off the features of Samsung products. And like the Apple mini-stores, Best Buy employees will receive special training, though it appears that the entire mobile department staff will be receiving this training instead of select individuals like the Apple sections. If all goes according to plan, Samsung and Best Buy plan to eventually roll the mini-store expansion out to all of Best Buy's locations.

The move signals both Samsung's desire to push forward with their newfound swagger and the acceptance of the largest brick-and-mortar electronics retailer in the United States of the aforementioned swagger. It's worth giving some consideration to how Samsung's store will be adjacent to and staffed by the Best Buy mobile department, where the sales emphasis is almost exclusively on smartphones, with a handful of cellular tablets thrown in for good measure.

Samsung's success in the mobile market has been almost exclusively thanks to their Galaxy S line. Where consumers see Apple as a company that makes desktop computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets, they see Samsung as televisions and smartphones. Setting up their store inside Best Buy is obviously a step to expand consumer recognition of what Samsung does, but by pairing it with Best Buy's powerful mobile presence they're also acknowledging what customers know and expect of Samsung.

It's also worth considering the benefits in the move for Best Buy. While they'll be losing significant floor space to the Samsung sections, this is a chain that's in the midst of an upheaval of sorts, faltering through a botched bid to take the company private and closing numerous stores over the past year to save costs. No doubt Samsung has paid well for the privilege of getting the same treatment as Apple, and that's money Best Buy desperately needs.

Researchers show stem cell fate depends on 'grip'

The field of regenerative medicine holds great promise, propelled by greater understanding of how stem cells differentiate themselves into many of the body's different cell types. But clinical applications in the field have been slow to materialize, partially owing to difficulties in replicating the conditions these cells naturally experience.

A team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has generated new insight on how a stem cell's environment influences what type of cell a stem cell will become. They have shown that whether human mesenchymal stem cells turn into fat or bone cells depends partially on how well they can "grip" the material they are growing in.

The research was conducted by graduate student Sudhir Khetan and associate professor Jason Burdick, along with professor Christopher Chen, all of the School of Engineering and Applied Science's Department of Bioengineering. Others involved in the study include Murat Guvendiren, Wesley Legant and Daniel Cohen.

Their study was published in the journal Nature Materials.

Much research has been done on how stem cells grow on two-dimensional substrates, but comparatively little work has been done in three dimensions. Three-dimensional environments, or matrices, for stems cells have mostly been treated as simple scaffolding, rather than as a signal that influences the cells' development.

Burdick and his colleagues were interested in how these three-dimensional matrices impact mechanotransduction, which is how the cell takes information about its physical environment and translates that to chemical signaling.

"We're trying to understand how material signals can dictate stem cell response," Burdick said. "Rather than considering the material as an inert structure, it's really guiding stem cell fate and differentiation ? what kind of cells they will turn into."

The mesenchymal stem cells the researchers studied are found in bone marrow and can develop into several cell types: osteoblasts, which are found in bone; chondrocytes, which are found in cartilage; and adipocytes, which are found in fat.

The researchers cultured them in water-swollen polymer networks known as hydrogels, which share some similarities with the environments stem cells naturally grow in. These materials are generally soft and flexible ? contact lenses, for example, are a type of hydrogel ? but can vary in density and stiffness depending on the type and quantity of the bonds between the polymers. In this case, the researchers used covalently cross-linked gels, which contain irreversible chemical bonds.

When seeded on top of two-dimensional covalently cross-linked gels, mesenchymal stem cells spread and pulled on the material differently depending on how stiff it was. Critically, the mechanics guide cell fate, or the type of cells they differentiate it into. A softer environment would produce more fat-like cells and a stiffer environment, where the cells can pull on the gel harder, would produce more bone-like cells.

However, when the researchers put mesenchymal stem cells inside three-dimensional hydrogels of varying stiffness, they didn't see these kinds of changes.

"In most covalently cross-linked gels, the cells can't spread into the matrix because they can't degrade the bonds ? they all become fat cells," Burdick said. "That tells us that in 3D covalent gels the cells don't translate the mechanical information the same way they do in a 2D system."

To test this, the researchers changed the chemistry of their hydrogels so that the polymer chains were connected by a peptide that the cells could naturally degrade. They hypothesized that, as the cells spread, they would be able to get a better grip on their surrounding environment and thus be more likely to turn into bone-like cells.

In order to determine how well the cells were pulling on their environment, the researchers used a technique developed by Chen's lab called 3D traction force microscopy. This technique involves seeding the gel with microscopic beads, then tracking their location before and after a cell is removed.

"Because the gel is elastic and will relax back into its original position when you remove the cells," Chen said, "you can quantify how much the cells are pulling on the gel based on how much and which way it springs back after the cell is removed."

The results showed that the stem cells' differentiation into bone-like cells was aided by their ability to better anchor themselves into the growth environment.

"With our original experiment, we observed that the cells essentially didn't pull on the gel. They adhered to it and were viable, but we did not see bead displacement. They couldn't get a grip," Burdick said. "When we put the cells into a gel where they could degrade the bonds, we saw them spread into the matrix and deform it, displacing the beads."

As an additional test, the researchers synthesized another hydrogel. This one had the same covalent bonds that the stem cells could naturally degrade and spread through but also another type of bond that could form when exposed to light. They let the stem cells spread as before, but at the point the cells would begin to differentiate ? about a week after they were first encapsulated ? the researchers further "set" the gel by exposing it to light, forming new bonds the cells couldn't degrade.

"When we introduced these cross-links so they could no longer degrade the matrix, we saw an increase toward fat-like cells, even after letting them spread," Burdick said. "This further supports the idea that continuous degradation is needed for the cells to sense the material properties of their environment and transduce that into differentiation signals."

Burdick and his colleagues see these results as helping develop a better fundamental understanding of how to engineer tissues using stem cells.

"This is a model system for showing how the microenvironment can influence the fate of the cells," Burdick said.

We tend to get stuck out of habit, but sometimes you just need to quit. As venture capitalist Brad Feld often says, "quit what you suck at." If you are doing something poorly AND you don't enjoy it, then you probably suck at it. If you are doing it poorly, but it's important to you, or you want to get better at it, or it fascinates you ? keep trying. You usually know when you hate something ? that's a leading indicator that it's not worth doing, unless you have no other choice.

You are, however, going to suck at most everything the first time you try it and probably for a little while after that. This advice wasn't crafted to tell you to give up every time you suck, but rather to pay attention to what you hate and aren't any good at. When those two things coincide, and you've given that line of work/activity/whatever a decent change, you should quit or you'll continue making yourself unhappy.

GOP moves to catch up with Democrats on technology

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans are moving aggressively to repair their technological shortcomings from the 2012 election, opening a new tech race to counter a glaring weakness against President Barack Obama.

With the blessing of party leaders, a new crop of Republican-backed outside groups is developing tools to improve communication with voters, predict their behavior and track Democratic opponents. After watching Obama win re-election with the aid of an unprecedented technological machine, GOP officials concede an urgent need for major changes in the way they reach voters. They are turning to a younger generation of tech experts expected to play a bigger role in the 2014 midterm elections and beyond.

"I think everybody realized that the party is really far behind at the moment and they're doing everything within their realistic sphere of influence to catch up," said Bret Jacobson, a partner with Red Edge, a Virginia-based digital advocacy firm that represents the Republican Governors Association, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Heritage Foundation.

Alex Skatell, former digital director for the GOP's gubernatorial and Senate campaign operations, leads a new group that has been quietly testing a system that would allow Republicans to share details about millions of voters ? their personal interests, group affiliations and even where they went to school. Democrats began using related technology years ago, giving Obama a significant advantage last fall in personalizing communication with prospective supporters.

With no primary opponent last year, Obama's re-election team used the extra time to build a large campaign operation melding a grass-roots army of 2.2 million volunteers with groundbreaking technology to target voters. They tapped about 17 million email subscribers to raise nearly $700 million online.

Data-driven analytics enabled the campaign to run daily simulations to handicap battleground states, analyze demographic trends and test alternatives for reaching voters online.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, in contrast, had only a few months after a lengthy primary fight to try to match Obama's tech advantage. He couldn't make up the difference. Romney's technology operation was overwhelmed by the intense flow of data and temporarily crashed on Election Day.

A 100-page report on how to rebound from the 2012 election, released last week by Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus, includes several technology recommendations.

"The president's campaign significantly changed the makeup of the national electorate and identified, persuaded and turned out low-propensity voters by unleashing a barrage of human and technological resources previously unseen in a presidential contest," the report said. "Marrying grass-roots politics with technology and analytics, they successfully contacted, persuaded and turned out their margin of victory. There are many lessons to be learned from their efforts, particularly with respect to voter contact."

Skatell, 26, is leading one new effort by Republican allies to fill the void. His team of designers, software developers and veteran Republican strategists is now testing what he calls an "almost an eHarmony for matching volunteers with persuadable voters" that would let campaigns across the country share details in real time on voter preferences, harnessing social media like Facebook and Twitter.

Other groups are working to improve the GOP's data and digital performance.

The major Republican ally, American Crossroads, which spent a combined $175 million on the last election with its sister organization, hosted private meetings last month focused on data and technology. Drawing from technology experts in Silicon Valley, the organization helped craft a series of recommendations expected to be rolled out later this year.

"A good action plan that fixes our deficiencies and identifies new opportunities can help us regain our advantage within a cycle or two," said Crossroads spokesman Jonathan Collegio.

A prominent group of Republican aides has also formed America Rising, a company that will have a companion "super" political action committee that can raise unlimited contributions without having to disclose its donors. Its purpose is to counter Democratic opposition research groups, which generated negative coverage of Romney and GOP candidates last year.

America Rising will provide video tracking, opposition research and rapid response for campaign committees, super PACs and individual candidates' campaigns but does not plan to get involved in GOP primaries. It will be led by Matt Rhoades, who served as Romney's campaign manager, and Joe Pounder, the research director for the Republican National Committee. Running its super PAC will be Tim Miller, a former RNC aide and spokesman for former GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman.

Romney and several Republican candidates were monitored closely by camera-toting Democratic aides during the campaign, a gap that Miller said American Rising hopes to fill on behalf of Republicans.

Brad Woodhouse, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, said his party has "a several years' lead on data and analytics infrastructure and we're not standing still."

Of the GOP effort, Woodhouse said, "We don't see them closing the gap anytime soon."

Stricker still gets requests for putting lessons

HUMBLE, Texas (AP) ? At some point, Steve Stricker may have to turn down all the requests for putting lessons.

Since straightening out Tiger Woods stroke, Stricker has somewhat facetiously become known as the tour's resident expert on the greens. He's still taking grief for it and a handful of players asked him for instruction on Wednesday in advance of this week's Houston Open.

"I'm hearing it all over the place," Stricker said. "Some of them are joking and I think some are serious."

Stricker is happy to help, but doesn't want to be distracted from his own game. He talked about balancing the two with Dave Stockton Sr., who developed a reputation as a putting guru when he was on tour and now coaches several players.

"He said, what you have to do is, if you're going to help a guy, just tell the guy, 'You never got help from me, so the word doesn't get out,'" Stricker said. "That's not the way I am, I guess. Makes sense that you still have to pay attention to what you're doing. Otherwise, you get caught up in everybody else and what they need to fix in their game and your game goes by the wayside all of a sudden."

Maybe more than ever, Stricker seems to have his focus in the right place.

The 46-year-old Stricker is scheduled to play only 11 events this year. So far, he's making the most of his limited opportunities, with $1.82 million earned in his three starts.

"It's only been three events, but I notice the change in myself playing so far," Stricker said. "I feel like there's a little bit less pressure on me to perform well, for whatever reason."

These days, Stricker won't pick up a club for more than a week after playing in a tournament, then resume practicing about five days before leaving for the next one. After finishing second to Woods at Doral, he returned home to Wisconsin and took in some basketball at the Big Ten tournament in Chicago the following week.

"I always have come out and done fairly well when I'm fresh," Stricker said. "Whether that's a mental thing, I don't know. But I enjoy coming out. I feel like I'm a little bit easier on myself, I'm fresher mentally."

He's back at one of his favorite tournaments this week, the one he credits with reviving his career in 2006.

Stricker finished 162nd on the money list in 2005, and needed a sponsor's exemption from tournament director Steve Timms to play in the Houston Open the following year. He shot a 66 in the final round to finish third, the first of seven top-10s in 2006, and was later named the tour's comeback player of the year.

"It brings back a lot of good memories," Stricker said. "(Timms) gave me a spot in '06, when I needed a spot. Played well, and went on to play well that year and ever since really. As long as I'm eligible to come here, I probably will."

The Houston Open became the run-up event to the Masters in 2007 and organizers embraced the niche, trying to create Augusta-like conditions at Redstone.

This year, the tournament lost that distinction, with the Masters starting later than usual. The Houston Open stayed put in the week after Bay Hill, while the PGA Tour moved the Texas Open in San Antonio to the week before Augusta.

The move on the calendar wasn't enough to lure Woods, who's never competed in the Houston Open and has historically played two weeks before majors.

But it was ideal for Rory McIlroy, who slipped to No. 2 in the world after Woods won at Bay Hill. McIlroy hasn't played since tying for eighth in Doral, the most encouraging performance of an otherwise forgettable start to his season.

"I definitely treat this tournament as its own entity and a tournament that's worth winning," McIlroy said. "It's not a week before the Masters, it works really well."

He's comfortable with Woods taking over the top spot in the world rankings, and the spotlight that comes with it. But McIlroy also wants to get in the mix in Houston before heading to Augusta.

"I want to get back to getting into contention in tournaments and trying to win," McIlroy said. "I think this is a good week to try and get into contention, have a chance with the Masters coming up. I'm just really focused on this week in Houston and trying to play well here."

Defending champion Hunter Mahan, 2011 winner Phil Mickelson and top-10 players Brandt Snedeker, Louis Oosthuizen and Keegan Bradley are also in the field this week. Bradley is up to No. 10 in the world after three straight top-10 finishes.

Carphone Warehouse taking Galaxy S4 pre-orders tomorrow, offering free accessories and tablet

UK high street retailer Carphone Warehouse has announced that it's to begin taking Samsung Galaxy S4 pre-orders from tomorrow, Mar. 28. And to sweeten the deal -- and get a commitment to buy out of consumers a month ahead of launch day -- Carphone is offering free accessory bundle for every pre-order, and a free Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 for the first 2,000.

The accessory pack includes a Galaxy S4 screen protector, case and car charger, which the retailer says is valued at £64.97. The tablet isn't exactly cutting-edge, but still sells online for upwards of £150, and has recently got its update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Carphone Warehouse, like other UK retailers, is expecting to stock the Galaxy S4 from Apr. 26. Hit up Carphone's Galaxy S4 landing page tomorrow to take advantage of the pre-order offer.

NEW YORK (AP) ? T-Mobile USA has revamped its pricing plans, the latest move in an industry that's still experimenting feverishly with various ways of luring customers and getting current ones to pay as much as possible. Here's how T-Mobile's gambit compares.

T-Mobile USA

The most significant change is that T-Mobile is breaking the cost of the phone away from the monthly service fee. Instead, the company will sell the phone on an installment. It's making a big deal out of the fact that it will no longer have two-year service contracts, but it's replacing them with two-year financing contracts. To buy an iPhone 5 from T-Mobile, you'll be putting $100 down and then paying $20 per month for two years to pay off the phone. That's on top of service fees that start at $50 per month for unlimited talk, text and 500 megabytes of data. An additional $10 per month gives you another 2 gigabytes of data. Add $20 instead, and you get unlimited data. If you leave T-Mobile within the two-year period, you'll still be charged $20 a month until the two-year contract runs out.

Pros: T-Mobile's plans are generally cheaper than the competition. If you've paid off your phone, your monthly bill declines. You can pay off the phone early if you want, with no penalty. You can also buy "unlocked" phones, or bring them over from AT&T, and get a good deal on monthly service. T-Mobile's "4G" service is relatively fast ? at least, faster than Sprint, in places where Sprint doesn't have LTE. T-Mobile also offers unlimited data service, for peace of mind.

Cons: T-Mobile's data network coverage is poor in rural areas. It's only now rolling out an "LTE" network, and it doesn't have access to the low frequencies where Verizon Wireless and AT&T run their wall-penetrating LTE networks. There's no option to share a data plan among many devices, but T-Mobile makes it relatively inexpensive to add a line to the plan: $10, which comes with 500 megabytes of data usage.

Bottom line: The price over two years for a 16-gigabyte iPhone 5 with unlimited calling, unlimited texting and 2.5 gigabytes of data usage per month, excluding taxes, is $2,020.

Verizon Wireless, AT&T

Last year, the two big guns in the wireless industry trotted out "shared data" plans that let a family tap into a common pool of data usage every month. They're betting on a future where phones will be just one of many devices connected to wireless networks.

Pros: The shared data plans make connecting tablets, laptops and mobile hotspots cheaper. Verizon has stellar coverage and the largest high-speed "LTE" network. AT&T has less coverage, but more than T-Mobile and Sprint, and it has a fast "4G" network in most places LTE isn't available.

Cons: For single phones, AT&T's and Verizon's prices are considerably higher than T-Mobile's ? you pay for that extra network coverage and reliability. Neither offers new customers unlimited data. The two-year contracts are complicated, with early termination fees and varying periods before you're eligible to buy a new phone at a subsidized price.

Bottom line: The price over two years for a 16-gigabyte iPhone 5 with unlimited calling, unlimited texting and 2 gigabytes to 3 gigabytes of data usage per month is $2,635, excluding taxes.

Sprint Nextel

The No. 3 wireless company has done the least to revamp its pricing plans ? they're pretty much the same they've been for the last five years.

Pros: Sprint has stuck to offering unlimited data plans, which is good for peace of mind. It sells smartphone service for as little as $35 per month through its Virgin Mobile subsidiary.

Cons: Unlimited data service is only good if the network is fast enough to serve up all the data you need, and Sprint's network is in a complicated transition period. Its "3G" service is very slow. It's complemented in places by Clearwire's "4G" network, and it's in the early stages of an "LTE" buildout. With unlimited data as the only option, Sprint-branded smartphone service isn't cheap. The two-year contracts are complicated, with early termination fees and varying periods before you're eligible to buy a new phone at a subsidized price.

Bottom line: The price over two years for 16-gigabyte iPhone 5 with unlimited calling, texting and data, excluding taxes, is $2,840.

Fire ants need damp soil
Despite its name, the fire ant isn?t afraid of a little water. In fact, the insects need just the right amount of moisture in soil to build superior nests, new experiments show.

Researchers from Georgia Tech in Atlanta filled 14.5-centimeter-deep aluminum tubes with an artificial soil made up of tiny glass beads and various amounts of moisture. The team then gave the stinging, invasive insects 20 hours to get their nest on. CT scans revealed that at about 10 percent moisture content ? a medium amount ? the ants (Solenopsis invicta) built tunnels twice as long as they did in parched soil. The researchers speculate that the dash of water makes the soil particles glom together in a manner that makes for easy digging.

??If you keep your backyard dry, they may leave and dig in your neighbor?s backyard,? said Daria Monaenkova, who presented the research on March 21 at the American Physical Society meeting. When the researchers tried varying the size of the soil particles, it didn?t influence nest construction: The fire ants chugged along fine with small or large grains, at least until the soil particles became as big as small worker ants. ? A tree stressed in the forest really does make a sound
Experiments that aim to explain the high-pitched screams emitted by thirsty trees have linked the distress calls to bubbles that form within the sap. But there may be more to the sounds than meets the ear.

When trees experience drought or really cold weather, they sometimes produce sounds. Most such noises are too high in frequency for the human ear to detect. But the sounds can reach 140 decibels, as loud as a jet-engine level rumble, Alexandre Ponomarenko of Grenoble University in France explained March 21.

To get at what produces the noises, Ponomarenko and his colleagues took sections of larch and pine, sandwiched them inside a porous gel and applied pressure. Along with about half of the noises came bubbles within the plant cells, microscope images reveal. The researchers speculate that the remaining noises might come from the bubbles moving through other cells, or perhaps even the wood fracturing. ? Rachel Ehrenberg

Nanocrystals slither through tiny tubes
Nothing can squeeze through tight spaces quite like a nanocrystal. Physicists watched a small iron crystal slide through a tube with an opening less than half the diameter of the crystal itself. The finding could lead to remotely controlled nanomachines that navigate through confined quarters.

Using an electric field, the researchers drove an iron crystal 12 nanometers in diameter through a carbon nanotube like a train in a tunnel. The surprise came when the tube constricted to 5 nanometers in diameter: The iron nanocrystal altered its shape and squeezed through. Microscope images showed that the iron remained a crystalline solid.

?It was mind boggling to watch,? said Sinisa Coh, a physicist from the University of California, Berkeley, who presented the results March 21.

Coh and his team attribute the crystal?s dexterity to the collective movement of its atoms. The researchers think that only the surface atoms move ? the ones at the back of the crystal migrate along the tube?s edges to settle at the front, allowing them to conform to the size of the tube. ? Boeing 787 Dreamliner completes flight check, certification still awaits

It wouldn't surprise us to learn that more than a few Boeing officials had their fingers crossed this morning in Everett, Washington. That's because the 787 Dreamliner took to the skies for the first time since being grounded in an effort to demonstrate a proper fix to that nasty overheating issue that's plagued the airliner's battery. The test flight, known as a functional flight check, lasted approximately two hours and will give the folks at Boeing an opportunity to examine data from the outing in advance of the 787's single certification flight -- a process that's otherwise known as one and done.
