Former coach Kevin Ashcroft says it is vital an investor steps forward to rescue Salford quickly

Former Salford coach Kevin Ashcroft has called for someone with ?courage? to step forward to save the club.

The Super League strugglers are in dire financial straights after another troubled season on the field, which sees them in 11th position with one game to play.

And Reds are increasingly rumoured to be on the verge of going bust with chairman John Wilkinson (pictured) desperately searching for fresh investment and ready to end his 30-year leadership of the club by selling up.

He wants someone to take up the challenge of revitalising Salford following their switch this season to their new Barton base.

Buyer

The move didn?t have the desired effect of boosting Reds crowds or their coffers ? and Wilkinson has stated his readiness to step aside for the right buyer.

A sale could be imminent. Wilkinson took a potential new investor on a guided tour of the club?s Salford City Stadium home at the end of last week.

And his close friend and former Reds? coach Ashcroft believes it is vital a new broom sweeps in quickly before the club goes out of existence.

?Now is the time for someone out there with loads of courage and integrity to? move in and? give him the lift he clearly needs,? said Ashcroft.

?Someone could take over the reins with the guarantee that the club is still in safe hands and ready to move forward.?

Wilkinson has offered his long-serving vice-chairman Howard Clague the chance to take charge but he is not keen, hence the search for new outside investment.

Reds have sounded out a number of firms and corporate outlets in a bid to generate additional revenue.

Whoever steps in, Ashcroft believes Wilkinson deserves huge credit for his input over the decades.

?If this happens, John would be able to stand aside and enjoy his retirement in his beloved Salford,? he said.

?In my view, John Wilkinson cannot do any more in terms of taking Salford forward. He has bankrolled the club and taken them from an old ground at the The Willows to a brand spanking state-of-the-art one at Barton.

?He promised this and has delivered. He has also secured good sponsorships.

?But for John there would no longer be any professional rugby league club in Salford.

?He has battled to keep the club afloat. John has done so much for the club and for his community over the years but obviously he now needs help to carry on running Salford.

?He has made mistakes, but if anyone deserves credit for their contribution to the game it?s John.

?If every club chairman had John?s outlook and commitment, the game would be in a far stronger position. We need more chairman like him in the game.?

?John has done so much but clearly now feels it?s time for someone else to come in.

?I can see where he is coming from ? he cannot go on forever.? Salford has been his life.?

Super League clubs are being advised to screen their players for hepatitis B after an unnamed player was diagnosed with the virus.

All 14 clubs held meetings with their senior squads yesterday.

The RFL say the player, who is not being named due to medical confidentiality, has not played or trained since his diagnosis.

?There has never been a known case of transmission of the hepatitis B virus in any contact sport but, following advice from chief medical officer, the RFL has issued its advisory to clubs,? read an RFL statement.
