Another item on the holiday hot list: Layaway

By TODAY staff

A new economic reality triggers the return of a payment plan of yesteryear. NBC's Chris Clackum reports.

Many people used to think of layaway as that relic of the past that your grandmother used during the Great Depression.

But the weak economy and? an increasing interest in keeping down credit card debt has pushed the holiday savings plan back into the spotlight.

Retailers including Kmart, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us are offering special deals and discounts aimed at getting people to start using layaway early.

Experts say layaway can be a good way to get customers into stores early, for shoppers it can be cheaper than using a credit card. But others note that those shoppers may be better off just saving money on their own, if they have a savings account, and holding out for late-season discounts.

Kickstarter: Helios, An iPhone Telepresence Rig On A Budget

Another day, another iOS-based telepresence rig. The Helios is a tiny little two-wheeled car that drives around with your iPhone or Touch in the passenger seat, allowing you to move around a scene and interact with remote subjects through the magic of telepresence.

They are raising money through Kickstarter.

Telepresence is a hard nut to crack. People just aren?t that comfortable having a robotic intermediary. But as this generation grows up with video calling and home robotics, I suspect it will be much easier to ? as the above image suggests ? roll out into the park with your SO.

From the creator, Tian Long Wang:

We are currently on the third iteration of Helios. The first model was developed during the Spring 2012 hackathon at Princeton University. This version was built on a trackpad platform by Robotshop and took first place int he hardware category of the hackathon. After some problems with the tracked moving parts, the second version of of Helios was built on the Boebot platform. As our development of the hardware continued, we created the third and current version with the help of SeeedStudio, one of the largest electronics manufacturers in China. The current version employs personal electronic circuits in addition to a completely new body design, manufactured through CNC and 3D plastic printing. For larger volumes, we will use injection molding for all plastic part, which also allows for a glossier look. As outlined, the pricing tiers represent actual manufacturing quotes from SeeedStudio.

The robot will cost $120 when it ships, but early buyers can get it for $99. The project is at $3,000 of a $50,000 pledge request so this might end up in the dustbin of telepresence robot history, but perhaps someone out there will buy 5,000 of them and send entire robot drone armies through the streets of major American cities. A guy can dream?

FILE - In a Friday, Feb. 9, 2007 file photo, accused Mexican drug kingpin Osiel Cardenas-Guillen, 39, leaves the federal courthouse in Houston after pleading not guilty to charges connected to running a cartel that at its height smuggled four to six tons of cocaine per month into the country. Cardenas-Guillen's nephew Rafael Cardenas Vela, a Gulf cartel member of distinguished lineage who ran three important ?plazas? or territories, recently testified to the organization's structure and operations in such detail that it could compose a short course _ Narco 101, perhaps. (AP Photo/Pat Sullivan, File)

(AP) ? When a regional manager for the Mexican Gulf cartel moved his operation to a more lucrative territory on the border, he took along not only his armored trucks and personal army, but also his department heads and a team of accountants.

In the grotesque violence that has enveloped Mexico it's easy to lose sight of the fact that, ultimately, these criminal organizations are complex businesses that rely on careful accounting as much as assault rifles. The structures underlying the most successful criminal organizations are stable in a way that means capturing or killing the man at the top may only be a temporary setback and pinching one revenue stream will only drive a search for others.

Rafael Cardenas Vela, a Gulf cartel member who ran three important "plazas," or territories, testified this week about the organization's structure and operations in such detail that it could compose a short course ? Narco 101, perhaps.

When prosecutors asked Cardenas to walk jurors through a decade of moves in the cartel's command and control structure, he turned to a giant organizational chart that would be recognizable to anyone in the corporate world except for spaces at the bottom for those "arrested" and "deceased."

Cardenas explained that in his plaza he had managers in charge of each revenue stream, including marijuana, cocaine and "cuota," or extortion payments demanded of legal and illegal businesses. Each department had an accountant. An additional accountant tracked the "piso," or tax that was charged on any drug loads moving through his territory. Another accountant supervised them all.

"I can't do everything myself," Cardenas said. "That's why we have someone in charge of every department."

That structure means simply removing the head is often not enough.

"You have to keep attacking the command and control elements again and again," said Will Glaspy, who oversees the Drug Enforcement Administration's operations in Texas' Rio Grande Valley, across the border from Gulf cartel territory.

Since Osiel Cardenas Guillen, Rafael Cardenas' uncle, was extradited to the U.S. in 2007, the cases have been building on themselves.

The man who took over for Osiel Cardenas was captured this month. Osiel Cardenas' brother was killed by Mexican marines in 2010. Most recently, a third brother was arrested in Mexico this month. Juan Roberto Rincon-Rincon, the plaza boss convicted Friday in Brownsville, is one of three Gulf cartel plaza bosses arrested in the U.S. last year. And Mexican authorities captured another alleged boss this week.

"It's the government of Mexico that has had such tremendous success targeting the Gulf cartel over the last five or six years," Glaspy said. "They're the ones who have continued to attack and focus on the command and control of the Gulf cartel."

"(The Gulf cartel's) corporate structure doesn't exactly look like a Fortune 500 company, but it's probably not far off," he said.

The structure reflects diversified interests. The cartel is still known primarily as a drug-trafficking organization, but it receives important revenue from smuggling immigrants and its extortion rackets.

The U.S. Border Patrol sector that covers much of the Gulf cartel's territory seized just over 1 million pounds of marijuana in 2011 and apprehended nearly 60,000 illegal immigrants. The cartel receives a cut for every kilogram of drugs and every illegal immigrant that passes through its territory.

Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, chairwoman of the government department at the University of Texas-Brownsville, credits Osiel Cardenas with leading the cartel's structural evolution. She said his nephew's testimony revealed the similarities between today's drug-trafficking organization and a legitimate corporation with transnational networks and diversified interests.

Osiel Cardenas' biggest move was creating the Zetas, former special forces troops, as a new department to handle the cartel's security and enforcement, she said.

"When (Osiel Cardenas) introduced the Zetas he changed the whole panorama of drug trafficking and organized crime in the hemisphere," she said. Their expansion into other criminal enterprises beyond drug trafficking served as a lesson for their longtime patrons and other criminal organizations. The Zetas split from the cartel in 2010 and became an independent criminal organization.

Without the critical smuggling corridors controlled by the Gulf cartel or its supply lines, the Zetas initially couldn't count on drug-trafficking revenue so they diversified to piracy and extortion, Glaspy said.

"It's all about the money, and if they're not making the money from drugs they will seek out other criminal activity to reinforce or find other revenue streams," he said.

The younger Cardenas testified that it cost him about $1 million a month when he ran the Rio Bravo plaza to cover payroll, rent, vehicles and bribes. He had to recruit, train and equip his own gunmen. When they were killed, he continued paying their salaries to their families.

He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine and marijuana and is cooperating with U.S. authorities in other cartel cases with the hope of receiving a shorter sentence.

Bribes went to every level of law enforcement, the press, members of the military and corrupted U.S. officials, he said.

"In order to have your plaza well, all organized, you have to pay all the police agencies," Cardenas said. Paying off the local police in Rio Bravo alone cost $20,000 per week, he said.

And when the Gulf cartel began going head to head with the Zetas in early 2010, he said, costs rose to the point where they were just breaking even.

Cardenas worked for nearly a decade as a plaza boss. Each of his plazas was within an hour's drive of the Texas border.

"All of the plazas that have river on the border are better," he said. More drugs and immigrants crossing, as well as border businesses such as pharmacies popular with American tourists. "More money."

TuneUp Utilities 2013

Is your PC not running as smoothly as it did when you first took it out of the box? A lethargic machine is oftentimes the result of a fragmented hard drive, an overabundance of junk files, and a Windows registry in disarray. If you'd like to put some pep in the step of your sluggish desktop or laptop, then check out TuneUp Utilities 2013. This application is designed to improve computer performance by tossing junk files, uninstalling unneeded programs, defragmenting the hard drive, and much, much more. Overall, the software does a fine job of revitalizing a worn PC, but the license limitations keep it from reaching the heights of the Editors' Choice award-winning Iolo System Mechanic 11.?

Getting Started
Compatible with Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP PCs, TuneUp Utilities 2013 requires just an Internet connection for activating the license and receiving updates. Unlike Iolo System Mechanics 11, the Editors' Choice among paid tuneup utilities, TuneUp Utilities 2012 limits you to only three installs. The free Comodo System Utilities?also lets users install the software on an unlimited number of PCs.

When you first fire up the program, you're prompted to run a system scan that will dig up registry and defragmentation problems, as well as other issues. Afterward, you can either run the one-click cleanup or go to the Start Center to check out all the features. I went with the latter option.

Features
Start Center has a mostly blue-and-white tabbed interface that highlights five sections: Status & Recommendations, Optimize System, Clean Up Computer, Fix Problems, and Customize Windows. Each tab has several useful, clearly-defined functions that are easy for the layperson to understand. The Status & Recommendations tab, which is the app's default screen, displays the number of problems found under the Fix Problems sub-heading and the Start 1-Click Maintenance button under the Maintain System sub-head. At the bottom of the window is an Optimization Status band that fills as you complete the steps needed to whip your PC into shape. I found it a nice way to stay on top of the maintenance process.

TuneUp Utilities introduces two new tools in this year's release: TuneUp Disk Cleaner and TuneUp Browser Cleaner. The former removes left over bits when programs don't cleanly uninstall; the latter removes browser activity from the likes of Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, and 22 other browsers.

TuneUp Uilities 2013 is more than a basic PC clean up application. It also contains many other functions including file backup and recovery, file deletion, Windows customization, and more. Some of the features duplicate native Windows function, but it's convenient to have them in one central location.

The Cleanup Process
Clicking Start 1-Click Maintenance launches the system cleaner, which scanned my test bed and displayed numerous of registry problems, broken shortcuts, and other PC problems. Clicking the "Show Details" beneath each problem count took me to a new screen that described problems in everyday language. Clicking the Start 1-Click Maintenance button cleaned up the mess, eliminating all the previously listed problems.

I returned to the home screen after that task was completed, where I noticed that the Optimization Status bar was at 50 percent. Anxious to see it hit 100 percent, I began exploring TuneUp Utilities 2013's other options that freed up disk space and repaired a handful of problems. The application identified 41 programs that potentially should be disabled. I appreciated that TuneUp Utilities 2013 displayed star ratings culled from the application's user base that helped me quickly see which software that I should keep.

Performance Improvements
I tested TuneUp Utilities 2013's ability to reinvigorate a PC by performing two tests?running the Geekbench system performance tool and measuring boot times?before and after running the software to compare the computer's potency. Each test was run three times and averaged. Before TuneUp Utilities 2013 scrubbed the system, the 2GHz Intel Core i7 X990 Style-Note notebook with 4GB of RAM and an 80GB Intel SSD drive achieved a 5,914 Geekbench score and booted in 50.3 seconds.

However, after using TuneUp Utilities 2012, the system saw improved performance. The GeekBench performance score rose to 6,428?just shy of Iolo System Mechanic 11's category leading 6,452 score. The boot time decreased to just 31.3 seconds, which topped Iolo System Mechanics 11's 31.7 second mark by a hair. Check out the performance chart below to see how TuneUp Utilities 2013 fared overall.

After running the tests, I used the computer extensively to get a sense of how the app had changed the responsiveness of the machine. Norton Utilities delivered a noticeable performance improvement; the entire OS moved at a snappier pace even with iTunes and Photoshop open.

Should You Use TuneUp Utilities 2013?
Priced at $49.95, TuneUp Utilities 2012 is pricier than the free Comodo System Cleaner, but does a better job of removing the digital crud. Its Geekbench performance is strong, and it delivers improved performance that rivals Iolo System Mechanic 11. If you can overlook the fact that the software can only be installed on three PCs at a time (if you want to install it on more than three PCs, you have to buy two licenses, which will cost nearly $100), you'll find it quite a useful tool for improving computer performance.

Facebook Launches ?Gifts?: Are You Comfortable ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

Facebook (FB) announced a major new feature Thursday: "Gifts."

The company will be working with partners to allow Facebook users to send cookies, chocolate, socks, and other types of gifts to other Facebook users, simply by clicking a small "gift" icon.

The service will keep track of special dates, like birthdays, and ask a user's friends whether they want to send something. The gift will consist of a coupon or physical item: Your friends will be prompted to enter the address to which they want the gift shipped, and then you'll be asked for a credit or debit card to pay for it. According to Facebook, you can pay with a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover branded credit or debit card.

Related: Will Groupon's Move into Mobile Payments Revitalize the Daily Deals Company?

Facebook has tried other eCommerce features before, but they've mostly failed. People go to Facebook to hang out and share things with friends, not to shop. One merchant recently said that trying to sell things on Facebook was like trying to sell things in a bar--namely, futile.

That said, this feature takes advantage of what Facebook is best at, which is relationships between friends. Assuming the gift service is convenient and easy to use, it might well work.

Of course, no sooner had the idea of a Facebook commerce service hit the wires than people began worrying about the risk of sharing credit-card and shipping information with Facebook. Many privacy advocates say Facebook already has way too much information about its users, and the addition of credit cards and addresses could compound that concern.

Related: Facebook Privacy Concerns: Majority of Facebook Users Don't Trust It

That said, although some people do tend to be freaked out about privacy concerns, most people aren't. If Facebook's gift service is simple, convenient, and helpful, most people will likely get over any privacy fears, the same way they have long since gotten over them with eCommerce companies like Amazon (AMZN).

According to Facebook's website, "when you pay for a Facebook Gift, we store your credit card for future use. If you don't want to have your credit card information stored on your account, you can remove it after making a purchase."

Related: Facebook Insider Tells All In "The Boy Kings"

(Believe it or not, back in the 1990s, there were briefly similar concerns about Amazon.)

The true test for Facebook's gift service will merely be whether people have an interest in using it. If it's easy and helpful, they probably will. If it isn't--or if Facebook users simply can't be bothered to send gifts--they won't.

Creating a Specific Source Usage Report in Legacy Family Tree 7.5

I demonstrated how to create a Source Usage Report for one specific source in two recent posts:

* ?Creating a Specific Source List Report in RootsMagic 5

* ?UPDATED AGAIN: Creating a Specific Source Usage Report in Family Tree Maker 2012?(this took three tries!)

The third genealogy management program that I use on a regular basis is Legacy Family Tree 7.5. ?When I wrote the RootsMagic post, reader Connie Sheets commented with the process to do this task in Legacy Family Tree 7.5 saying:

*Open the Master Source List and tag the source (or sources) you want.
*Open the Reports menu, and choose Source Citations (under the Books/Other tab).
*Under the Include tab, check Only Tagged Sources, Master Sources and All Citations to Each One, Include specific events, and include Citation Detail.
*Under the Options tab, select whatever style you want; you probably want the Printed Style format rather than List Style format.
*Preview or print.

Thank you, Connie! ?A user could search for the process in the Help screen also, by using the Sources, Citation Report in the index or searching for "Source Citation Report."

Here is the process I used (helped by Connie's nice list!):

1) ?In Legacy Family Tree 7.5, click on the "View" menu item and select "Master lists" and then "Source..." as shown below:

2) ?That opens the "Master Source List" window, and to Tag one specific source, scroll down the list until you find the specific source (in my case, the Vital Records of Westminster, Mass. book) and click the box in the "Tag" column:
Close the screen above - the specific source I want is now Tagged.

3) ?Click on the "Reports" menu item, and select the "Books and Other" tab (shown below) and then the "Source Citation Report" button (shown below):

In the screen above, in the "Include: tab, I checked the "Only tagged sources" radio button and the "Master Sources and All citations to Each One" radio button, the "Include specific events," "Include citation detail," "Include citation text," and "Include citation comments" check boxes. ?I left the "Include surety level of citations unchecked.

4) ?I clicked the "Preview" button on the "Source Citation Report" window and saw:

The resulting report was had 6 pages, with the master Source information at the top of the report. ?For each person, the person's name in surname alphabetical order (first name first, with person ID number), the Fact(s) (e.g., Birth, Death, etc.), and then the citation detail (if present) is listed. ?Note that it provides citation details when provided, but includes those that don't have source citation details.

This report created by Legacy Family Tree is much more compact than those created by RootsMagic 5 or Family Tree Maker 2012, and provides exactly the information that I wanted to create. ?The process is very simple once you figure out that you have to Tag the specific source.

5) ?There is another interesting report here in Legacy Family Tree 7.5. ?If I selected the radio buttons for "all sources" and for "Master Sources and Citation Summary Charts" in the "source citation Report" window, I can obtain a nice list of ?all of my Master Sources and how many citations I have in my database:

This report is 64 pages, and lists all 793 of my Master Sources and how many citations are included. ?The most was for Find-A-Grave (1420 citations).

6) ?I wanted to see how big the report would be for my (approximately) 30,600 source citations in all of the Master Sources, and Legacy created it after about one minute. ?Here is the first page:

1,138 pages! ?That is a great report! ?I'm not going to Print it...but I did save it (only 1,7 megabytes). ?Note that RootsMagic 5 and Family Tree Maker 2012 can create a similar report, but I like the format of this report best.

I could save as a PDF file, or print, any of these Source Citation Reports. ?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans on Thursday fired a vendor suspected of submitting 108 questionable new voter registrations in Florida's Palm Beach County, ground zero for disputed ballots in 2000's presidential race.

The Republican Party of Florida used Virginia-based Strategic Allied Consulting to help register and turnout voters in Florida, one of a shrinking handful of states President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are contesting. The Florida state party had paid the firm more than $1.3 million so far, and the Republican National Committee used the group for almost $3 million of work in Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia.

"We have zero tolerance for any threat to the integrity of elections. When we were informed of an alleged incident we immediately cut all ties to the company," RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer said.

The state party similarly sought to distance itself from the firm and its main operative, Nathan Sproul.

"We immediately informed the Republican National Committee that we were terminating the contract with the voter-registration vendor we hired at their request because there is no place for voter-registration fraud in Florida," state Republican Party Executive Director Mike Grissom said in a statement.

Strategic Allied Consulting said the suspected forms came from one person and the company was cooperating with elections officials in Florida.

"Strategic has a zero-tolerance policy for breaking the law," said Fred Petti, a company attorney. "Accordingly, once we learned of the irregularities in Palm Beach County, we were able to trace all questionable cards to one individual and immediately terminated our working relationship with the individual in question."

The company did not identify the individual.

Polls show Obama increasing his lead over Romney in Florida, a hard-fought state that hosted the GOP's convention last month. If Romney were to lose Florida and its 29 electoral votes, he would have to sweep other battleground states of Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and New Hampshire to win the White House.

Palm Beach County Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher's staff noticed signatures that looked alike and incomplete forms submitted on Sept. 5 by Strategic Allied Consulting. Bucher met with prosecutors on Monday to request an investigation.

Palm Beach County was at the center of the ballot recount in 2000, with George W. Bush and Al Gore both contesting the results that seemed to give Reform Party nominee Pat Buchanan an unusually strong showing. Critics ? and legions of attorneys ? said the ballot design led many Gore supporters to cast votes for Buchanan.

The subsequent questions that arose about how ballots should be tabulated made their way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which settled the bitter contest in a 5-4 ruling barring a ballot recount. Bush won.

Sproul, a longtime GOP operative who leads Strategic Allied Consulting, previously worked for Romney's campaign through a separate firm, Lincoln Strategy Group. Romney spokeswoman Sarah Pompei says the campaign has not used Sproul since 2011, when the campaign was using Lincoln to collect signatures to get on primary ballots.

The deadline to register in Florida for Nov. 6's election is Oct. 9.

Foursquare rolls out iPhone 5 / iOS 6 update, Explore gains more personalization options

Image

Foursquare is on an update tear. Aside from the "Always On" feature it introduced recently, the company just rolled out a new iPhone update that lets users create more personalized maps. Compatible with iOS 6, the update improves upon the existing Explore map with a more tailored search experience -- you can map out places you haven't been, top destinations, favorite spots, or where your friends have checked in. The app also promises to be faster and to have an improved design that takes advantage of the iPhone 5's larger screen. The new update certainly goes along with the company's philosophy that Foursquare is a discovery and recommendations engine rather than just another social service. Let's just hope the new Apple Maps doesn't hamper that experience.

eBooks and serendipity machines: an interview with Connor Tomas ...

This interview is cross-posted from NYWF?where I?m one of the official bloggers this year.

There?s a small link at the top of Bkclb?s Infinite Book project which directs to the Wikipedia entry on Borges? The Book of Sand ? a typically curious Borges tale about a book of all books that is ?exactly infinite?: possessing neither a beginning or an end. The text becomes a monstrous, tormenting object to its owner in the Borges tale, but it?s a far less troubling idea in the age of the internet, and Bkclb have turned the concept into an interesting way to discover ebook titles we may not have sought out otherwise.

When Connor explains Infinite Book to me, he describes it as a ?serendipity machine? ? and this could perhaps extend to the Bkclb project as a whole, with its emphasis on reader discovery. Bkclb is a new ebook store and epublishing startup site based in Adelaide. It allows authors to sell ebooks across multiple platforms, and experiments with ways for readers to find new writing.

This year NYWF is collaborating with Bkclb to run an online version of the annual zine-fair. I spoke with co-founder Connor Tomas O?Brein about this new site and his epublishing adventures.

Tell me about Bkclb and how it began?

In a nutshell, Bkclb is a platform for small publishers and individual authors to sell ebooks elegantly and easily. Our focus is on letting publishers and authors exert more control over the selling experience, and trying to make the ebookstore experience feel more personal and less like stepping into a warehouse or megastore.

Bkclb began as a PhD dissertation I was working on, looking at how the decisions of programmers and interface designers shape how we read and disseminate electronic books. Yes, the book as a cultural object is changing, but what I wanted to know was: who?s changing it, how, and why? I began speaking with writers and publishers about the epublishing landscape, and what I was hearing was, ?Amazon and Apple just don?t care about literary culture.? I asked publishers how they?d do things differently, and began compiling a long, long list of their ideas. Eventually, I realised I had to do something with this list. Something seemed very wrong ? it was this hugely exciting time for publishing, but publishers seemed totally unhappy. I got in touch with Fred Fan, a super talented developer I?d worked with before, and we set about turning that list into something real.

One of the really interesting things about Bkclb is its focus on reader discovery, and this is something you highlight as a point of difference to other ebook stores. Why did you feel this aspect was important when developing the site??

I really dislike the way books now tend to be shunted into ultra-specific, pre-established genres. It makes it really easy for readers to stick to a very particular category of book and just read the same thing over and over. When you combine this with Amazon?s algorithms, you can end up locked into a feedback loop, your reading pool reduced to a tiny set of writers producing almost exactly the same stuff. It?s often said that bricks-n-mortar independent bookstores are valuable because they?re curated and because they?re staffed by employees who can direct you to books you?ll love but may?ve never considered otherwise. I think it?s important to bring that online. It?s important to create a bookstore platform that encourages readers to take chances, to explore and expand their idea of what a good book could be.

A really beautiful project you have on Bkclb is Infinite Book. Can you explain this project??

We?ve set up an algorithm that ?reads? through all the books sold through Bkclb and extracts random sentences and paragraphs. We then display those snippets on an endless page stripped of context ? no covers, titles, author names, genre tags. Only after hovering over or tapping the snippet does all that metadata fade in. You end up finding incredibly beautiful, funny, strange passages from works you would?ve usually dismissed immediately.

You reference a Jorge Luis Borges short story The Book of Sand. Is this where you got the idea for Infinite Book?

The Book of Sand? and Horse_ebooks. I?d love to write an insufferably academic essay about the relationship between Twitter nonsense spam accounts and Argentine magical realists. Another time, I guess?

Have you found that the passages or lines interact?

You do get some beautifully, touchingly weird ones. My favourite combo so far:

Book 1: ?No one?s giving boys away.?

Book 2: ?I have no spell to make a boy.?

Book 3: ?Do you promise??

The first two snippets are delightfully odd just by themselves.

What other ways of reader discovery are you exploring?

One idea we?re exploring right now is mapping titles and publishing houses geographically. Different cities foster literary communities, but there?s no easy way right now to see what writers in Melbourne or Adelaide are producing right now, compared to those in, say, Seattle or Toronto. I think it could be pretty cool. I?m not sure what we?ll find yet.

We?re also looking at curation and categorisation. You need categories to make a bookstore navigable, but we?re thinking about different ways books could be categorised. All this is happening in consultation with publishers and writers, playing off their ideas. When you ask a writer, ?How would you create a bookstore??, you get some fairly out-there ideas.

Bkclb is running the NYWF efair this year, how did this come about?

Every year, the National Young Writers Festival runs a Zine Fair, which is always really nice. The great thing about zine culture is that it?s egalitarian, and there?s no real distinction between ?buyer? and ?creator? ? everybody?s just a part of the culture. I like the idea of trying to translate the zine culture ethos to ebooks. Ebooks are perfect for an emerging writer to get some short work out into the world. Pip Smith and I worked on the eFair concept together, our idea being to make it really easy for festival-goers to buy and read the work of other festival-goers on their devices during or after NYWF. Seems like a no-brainer when everybody?s walking around with devices that double as ereaders. This stuff is really exciting to me. When you think about writers festivals, there are so many missed opportunities to play around with what?s possible with digital platforms. I know Lisa Dempster is really interested in all this as well, so I?m excited to see what she?s got planned for next year?s Melbourne Writers Festival.

Which works are you most excited about in the efair?

Oh, everything, basically (all over here). We?ve got a digital only edition of The Lifted Brow, the latest Voiceworks (which is gonna be launched in physical form at NYWF), and some original fiction and poetry from Emily Craven, Amelia Walker, and Rory Kennett-Lister. I hear a few groups are going to be working on ebooks during the festival, so it?ll be interesting to watch that list of titles potentially grow over the weekend.

How can authors wanting to publish with Bkclb get involved?

Over on the Bkclb.co homepage, there?s a ?Publish with Bkclb? button. We?re really excited to hear from emerging writers and small publishers, particularly if you?ve got an interesting project in mind.

Dragster sets speed record with cheesy biofuel

4 hrs.

A dragster powered by biofuel brewed from cheese-making waste has set a blistering land-speed record for a one liter, two cylinder engine of 64.4 miles per hour.?

?That, in that class, is fast,? Lance Seefeldt, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Utah State University, told NBC News on Tuesday.

Since no record existed for that size engine prior to Seefeldt's cruise down the Bonneville Salt Flats earlier this month, the the professor and his colleague first?set the ?record with petroleum-derived diesel.

?Then we backed it up with the biodiesel we made from the waste cheese process,? Seefeldt said.?

The waste is sugars that a yeast strain converts into oils that are then developed into biodiesel with a patent-pending procedure, he explained.

The team is also making biofuels with bacteria as well as microalgae, which convert carbon dioxide into fuel with energy from the sun.?

They?ve tested all three in the lab and found them to ?match commercial biodiesel in every way and, in some ways, they are even superior to petroleum diesel,? Seefeldt said.

For example, they burn cleaner and thus produce fewer air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, he said.

While the process to create the fuels is currently at the lab, proof-of-concept stage, the team can produce the yeast-derived version in gallon quantities.

That?s enough, they reckoned, to test the fuel in a small engine, so they built the Aggie-A-Salt dragster and raced at the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association?s 2012 World of Speed event.?

Check out the video below for raw footage from the speed test.

Now that the record is set, the team is back in the lab scaling up the bacteria and microalgae processes to produce enough fuel to race with them next summer.

?We want to run them head-to-head against each other at our top speeds, which we?re confident will be much faster next year,? Seefeldt said.

If all continues to go well, he added, the raw materials to produce these fuels at commercial scales is readily abundant.

The cheese factory where the team sources their waste material, for example, produces enough in a day for 66,000 gallons of fuel.

?You could multiply that across the country and different waste streams and, so it is infinitely scalable,? Seefeldt said.?

If the?technology is also able to compete in price with fossil fuels, then our future really could be cheesy.

Cutting through the genomic thicket in search of disease variants

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? In the early stages of that vast undertaking known as the Human Genome Project, enthusiasm ran high. The enterprise would be costly and laborious but the clinical rewards, unprecedented. Once the complete blueprint of life was unlocked, the genetic underpinnings for a broad range of human maladies would be laid bare, allowing custom-tailored diagnosis and treatment and revolutionizing the field of medicine.

Or so it was thought.

Instead, "scientists were confronted with thousands of mutations in the collection of proteins in personal genomes, with no ready guide about what they meant in terms of health or disease," according to Sudhir Kumar, a researcher who directs the Center for Evolutionary Medicine and Informatics at Arizona State Unive rsity's Biodesign Institute.

Kumar explains that scientists and clinicians have turned to computer tools that sift meaningful variants from the glut of mutations they face. But the accuracy of these tools may be low, says Kumar.

Now Kumar, Li Liu and their colleagues describe a new technique that can reduce the rate of false positives in such tests, thereby increasing their reliability. The group's results recently appeared in the advanced online issue of the journal Nature Methods.

The new technique, labeled EvoD (for Evolutionary Diagnosis) capitalizes in part on comparative genomics -- an examination of DNA positions across evolutionary time and between diverse species -- to analyze the likely significance of particular human gene variants. EvoD was shown to work much better for positions that are the most evolutionarily conserved in the protein-coding portion of the human genome -- known as the exome.

As co-author Liu explains, researchers have taken a keen interest in mutations occurring at ultra-conserved sites in the exome, as these are usually the most critical in terms of protein function. Variants that are functionally damaging at such locations -- where evolution is highly resistant to change -- are likely to have profound effects on health, often producing so-called Mendelian diseases, which negatively impact health. EvoD performs better than existing methods in diagnosing these mutations.

The Center for Evolutionary Medicine and Informatics now provides EvoD as an online tool and genomic researchers have begun to use it already. The new technique and the tool pave the way for a deeper understanding of genomic variance and advances the quest for personalized disease diagnoses.

Aboriginal Initiatives: Classroom Climate Series | Centre for ...

The development of academic and professional programming in the area of classroom climate is relatively new and unexplored. Aboriginal Initiatives programming at the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) responded by creating an innovative professional development series called Aboriginal Initiatives: Classroom Climate.

During the initial development of this series, Amy Perreault, Coordinator of Aboriginal Initiatives at CTLT, combined her research expertise with her direct experience creating projects such as What I Learned in Class Today: Aboriginal Issues in the Classroom.

The development of this series mirrored a process often taken on by faculty who teach about Aboriginal and other socially contentious issues in their classes. In some ways the inevitable challenges faculty face in this endeavor were present here too; creating an approach that would allow for a diverse group of people, all coming with different levels of understanding and experiences, to come together and create a community.

During this year-long series, senior and junior faculty, teaching assistants, researchers, graduate students, and staff from all over the University have the opportunity to challenge their own assumptions about what they have learned about Aboriginal people, become more critically aware of their teaching and research practices, and learn more about how they engage with topics that challenge their own social location within the institution.

The breadth of participants? experiences, locations, and roles within the University create a unique environment for the exchange of interdisciplinary approaches to teaching, and an opportunity to engage with and share experiences from a diverse range of perspectives.

This strategically-designed series creates a unique learning experience for participants by combining a series of mini-class lectures, interactive group activities, and one-on-one discussions with a strong focus on activities and discussions designed to evoke critical thinking and self awareness. As a result, participants gain skills to create a more clearly developed and informed approach to understanding and teaching about Aboriginal and other socially contentious issues in a curricular setting.

A great way to learn more about services at Aboriginal initiatives, and the Classroom Climate series in particular, is to attend the CTLT Aboriginal Programs Open House on September 26.

The first monthly session, Here: Valuing, Recognizing and Acknowledging Place, is on October 2. During this session presenters will discuss the importance of teaching faculty, students, and staff about local histories and the diversity of British Columbia.

One of the four presenters for this session will be Sarah Ling, the Aboriginal Initiatives Graduate Academic Assistant at CTLT. She will be sharing a project she co-developed on campus called Decolonizing Knowledge. This initiative facilitates strategies to reconcile the cultural misrepresentation and appropriation that occurs on the UBC Point Grey campus, and pioneered a community-based naming process between the Musqueam First Nation and UBC Student Housing and Hospitality Services. In her work with CTLT, Sarah will assist with the creation of resources committed to developing a learning climate at UBC that prepares students, faculty, staff, and administration to better understand the dynamics of discussing Aboriginal issues in a multicultural, course-based environment. The resources will value and acknowledge the traditional and unceded territory of the Musqueam people which our learning and activities at UBC take place on.

Impact on Faculty Presenters and Participants

The diversity of experiences, both of the participants and the series presenters, has been cited as being one of the key strengths of this program. Past participants and presenters also noted that they appreciated the honesty and integrity of the conversations in each session, where facilitators were ?walking the walk? by demonstrating how they pedagogically built in how to have difficult conversations in their classes. Here?s what some of them had to say:

?

The nuanced nature of working with Aboriginal people and issues is often difficult to address in a substantive way. I was impressed with the preparation, level of participation and feedback from participants. It opened a space to further our work and it is a model for future discourse on these issues.

Rick Ouellet, Aboriginal Student and Community Development Officer (series presenter)

I believe that fostering productive conversations amongst faculty makes us better able to foster productive conversations in our classrooms with our students. It gives us important background knowledge, confidence in the language and terminology, practices to address sensitive topics, and pedagogical strategies. It gives us a sense, too, that we are not alone: other people in other classrooms are raising similar issues in different disciplinary contexts. One of the main things I have taken away from these sessions is the sense that yes, discussing Aboriginal issues in the classroom can be sensitive and highly charged, but if we do not give our students the space, time, and skills to discuss them there, then when will they have the opportunity? If not here, where?

Katherine Grafton (faculty participant)

While the focus of the series was the setting of the classroom, through discussions we discovered that the setting includes other spaces on campus. Libraries in particular became a space where the discussions turned as an example of what happens outside of the classroom. I think that it was an excellent opportunity for librarians to engage with faculty in a way that highlights the instruction on the reference desk, and how we face similar challenges with questions related to Aboriginal issues.

Sarah Dupont, Aboriginal Engagement Librarian, Xwi7xwa Library (staff participant)

Are there any fighters who can beat Jon Jones?

Jon Jones' win on Saturday night was awe-inspiring. He survived a grotesque armbar, and came back to win with fourth-round submission. He seems to keep getting better and better with each fight, this time incorporating jiu-jitsu skills into his win. At the moment, he appears unbeatable.

Are there any fighters in the UFC who can eventually take him on and win? Any fighters who can take time to study Jones, figure out his every move, and then finally solve the Jon Jones puzzle?

Dan Henderson: The one-time PRIDE and Strikeforce champion was supposed to fight Jones before he was injured and UFC 151 was canceled. He has already put in the time and effort to fight Jones, and may already have him figured out. His age is an issue, but Henderson still wants the fight.

Alexander Gustaffson: One of Jones' biggest advantages is his reach. He was able to hold Belfort at bay throughout the fight by simply extending his arm. At 6-foot-5, Gustafsson is an inch taller. He has a fight lined up with former champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua who will show if "The Viking" is ready for the next step.

Chael Sonnen: Based on Sonnen's inability to handle Anderson Silva in their last fight, there is no reason to believe Sonnen could beat Jones. However, the run-up to the fight would be so much fun. Considering the UFC put Jones up against a middleweight who lost a title shot, integrity of the belt doesn't matter as much as entertainment or making money. Sonnen has already shown he can get under Jones' skin in a way no one else has, and that just may give him the edge in a bout.

Anderson Silva: Could he beat Jones? Yes. Will this fight ever, ever happen? No. Silva keeps talking about wanting a fight with welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, and he does have a few challenges waiting for him at middleweight.

Who is missing from this list? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.
