It has been revealed that young people in Britain are the group who are struggling with the most debt, according to the new Which? Quarterly Consumer Report.
The results of the report found that women and young people ? aged between 18 and 29 ? are suffering with the highest levels of debt.
The debt problems encountered by this age group have had a detrimental effect on their living standards and quality of life, with the report also discovering that 47p was owed in debts for every pound earned. This, when compared with the national average of 21p, highlights the huge impact that the rising debt levels are having.
45% of young people also claimed that they ran out of money every month ? a 7% increase on the consumer average of 38%. As well as this, one in ten young people admitted that they had defaulted on a bill.
In light of the findings in the report, various consumer groups are now looking for ways in which to educate young people on how to successfully manage their money, leading to calls for compulsory personal finance education in schools.
