White back as Demons' boys soccer coach

Steve White served on the organizing committee that helped bring soccer to Glenwood Springs High School in the late 1980s. He went on to coach both the boys and girls teams for long stretches before taking over the soccer program at Colorado Mountain College.

Twenty-something years later, White is once again synonymous with Demon soccer. Just as he was for much of the 1990s, he is again in charge of both Glenwood's boys and girls squads.

White, who has coached the girls the past two seasons, has been tabbed to take over the boys program beginning this fall.

?I look forward to the opportunity to come in with the boys and see if we can have a successful program,? he said. ?I know this is a group that's been dominated by graduating seniors. That's an exciting piece of it. I don't think they even realize yet what their potential is. There is some very good talent here.?

White is replacing outgoing frontman John Mount, who spent the last five seasons atop the program and a total of six seasons on the coaching staff. With a 1-year-old son, graduate school classes and a full-time teaching job at GSHS occupying much of his time, he just didn't have room for coaching in his schedule.

?It's just time constraints,? Mount explained. ?Everything's positive. It's good to see Steve got the reins. He's got that in-depth experience and soccer knowledge. I feel like they're in good hands.?

White has certainly had some recent success with the girls program, directing the Demons to 4A Western Slope League titles in 2011 and 2012. They also won the league crown in 2010 with White as an assistant coach.

The veteran coach believes having the same boys and girls coach will serve GSHS soccer well.

?I think you get some consistency in the style of play and system of play,? he reasoned. ?I know that's true with Steamboat Springs and Battle Mountain, in my view.?

As he molds the program to his style, White plans on making the past a big part of the present by leaning on the Demons' rich soccer history. He's already been researching past team performances and all-conference players, compiling data to log into the record books.

?We want to bring back the Demon soccer culture,? he said.

White is dipping into that culture with a pair of coaching staff additions. New to the crew this season are GSHS alums John Ingelhart and White's son, Bryan. Both crafted storied careers at the school.

White and his present crop of players are already hard at work preparing for the season, which is right around the corner. Official fall practices begin Aug. 13.

?We've been holding Wednesday night kick-arounds,? he relayed. ?I've been able to see about 20 of the players.?

A number of additional preseason activities are in the works, like a 7-on-7 tournament held in conjunction with Glenwood Springs Soccer Club and a trip to Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City for a day of scrimmages against teams from throughout the state. Both events are slated for late August.

?I'm really excited about the season,? White said. ?This is a different view than I've had in recent years. We have a lot of young players that are eager to develop.?
