Colbert unveils do-it-yourself Super PAC kit

Listen up, America. If there's anyone out there that can teach a thing or two about running a successful Super PAC, it's Stephen Colbert. The host of "The Colbert Report" is currently spearheading a successful PAC movement and generating interest in the organizations, according to Congressional website TheHill.com. He is also generating more Super PAC buzz than some of the current GOP candidates.

Remember the Super PAC kidnapping fiasco between Colbert and "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart a while ago? After that debacle, it?s no wonder that the interest in the matter hasn?t quelled. Considering his influence, as Colbert explains, it also comes as no surprise that a student from the University of Texas wrote a letter detailing his "overwhelming urge" to start a Colbert Super PAC organization at his school. And so, the extension of Colbert?s political tentacles begins.

Colbert dubs the new organization at the University of Texas "Texans for A Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow," and he doesn?t stop there.
His generosity extends to every college in America so they can have their own Colbert PAC. In his infomercial voice he explains: If you have a burning desire for civil engagement -- and $99 to spare, then you can have the Colbert Super PAC "Super Fun Pack" ? a do-it-yourself guide to creating your own Super PAC.

In it you?ll find all the necessary legal documents to create one ? which is really just one sheet from the Federal Election Commission. Getting the guide from the PAC, as opposed to free online ? Colbert explains ? would spare you the awkwardness of having loved ones see the FEC come up in your browser history. Also included in the nifty pack is a hand-drawn instruction manual, an Allen wrench, a "Turtles don?t like peanut butter" T-shirt, a sign that reads "If the Super PAC is caucusing, don?t bother knockusing!", a pair of Colbert Super PAC tube socks, and to top it all off -- the Forbes list of the 400 richest Americans, which can be used to solicit donations.

And just think, all those goodies for a mere $99!

Review: Wrath of the Titans | People's Critic: Film Reviews - seattlepi ...

Almost two years after the release of Clash of the Titans, Sam Worthington is back as Perseus, the son of Zeus who struggles with his Demigod destiny, in Wrath of the Titans. What better way to review this movie than to ask a few burning questions and get answers from the one person who will give me an honest answer ? ME!

What?s the plot?

The plot stays relatively simple. ?Perseus teams up with Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) and Agenor (Toby Kebbell) to rescue his father Zeus (Liam Neeson) from Hades (Ralph Finnes)and his evil half demigod brother Ares (Edgar Ramirez). They also must defeat the evil Titans who?ve escaped prison and plan to destroy the world. It sounds like a lot, but it?s nothing two Demigods and a human girl can?t handle.

How is it different from 2010?s Clash?

Well, there are more monsters and en evil half brother. At times, Wrath feels a lot like Clash, but it is indeed its own story. That?s either good or bad depending on how you feel about the franchise. ?Wrath also has more action, 50% less Pegasus, and 75% more Sam Worthington mullet.

What will audiences like?

They?ll enjoy some of the really cool state-of-the-art special effects. ?The evil Titans look pretty good on the big screen. Toby Kebbell is great comic relief as Agenor. He?s like the third wheel comedian in a 80?s buddy cop flick. He?s annoyingly funny, but the two buddies desperately need him for [fill in expertise or something he is singular knowledge of]. Agenor fills that role in and fills it well. He?s easily my favorite part of this film.

Should I see it in 3D?

Not necessary. If you do have money to blow and like wearing plastic glasses, help yourself.

What will make people want to walk out?

The dialogue is dry and boring for the entire film. There are way too many speeches about family, brotherhood, ?how they must come together as one, and blah blah blah blah. Waaaaaaay too much talking and not enough swords swinging.? The pre fight speeches were the first two times, but after the ninth time it?s pretty old. Sam Worthington is someone I want to like, but he performed like a mannequin in a tunic. ?The lifeless way he delivers his lines makes me cringe. Not to mention he spend the entire movie getting his butt kicked. I don?t need my hero to be a punching bag. I know Sam is happily cashing this checks, but this has to stop.

There?s also Perseus? son Helius. He spends the whole time looking like he?s about to cry or he?s constipated. I?m still not sure which one it was. I hated him almost as much as I hate Carl from The Walking Dead????almost. Carl still holds the number one spot.

Also, the movie is 90 minutes, but it paced poorly so it feels much longer. I?m taking to you Unnecessary Ten Minute Scene find a maze that wasn?t even hard to solve.

Will we get to see the big battle we missed in Clash?

Nope. I?m surprised people didn?t throw drinks at the screen. 100 minutes of build up to a 2 minute fight. Audiences will not be pleased.

Was it necessary to toss in a love story at the end?

I?m not sure why that happened. I?m still trying to wash the stink of that scene off me.

How do you really feel?

If you?re a fan of Clash, you may want to buy a ticket for Wrath. If you felt Clash was just ?meh? and needed more work, you?re going to leave with the same frustrations after Wrath. The poor dialogue and plot points that lead nowhere were just too much for me this time around. I couldn?t? wrap my head around seeing Zeues and Hades throw people around like rag dolls as they walk through the battlefield. That scene was sad and funny at the same time.

Wrath of the Titans is an?unnecessary?Clash sequel and hopefully the last.

New video raises doubts about Fla. gunman's story

MIAMI (AP) ? Newly released police video of a handcuffed George Zimmerman may be important for what it doesn't show: No obvious cuts, scrapes, blood or bandages. No clearly broken nose. No plainly visible evidence of a life-and-death struggle with Trayvon Martin.

As the furor over race and self-defense raged on in Florida and around the U.S. on Thursday, Martin's family and supporters seized on the footage to dispute Zimmerman's claim that he shot and killed the unarmed black teenager after the young man attacked him.

While cautioning that the video is grainy and far from conclusive, some legal experts agreed it does raise questions about Zimmerman's story. The video was made about a half-hour after the shooting Feb. 26.

"It could be very significant," said Daniel Lurvey, a former Miami-Dade County homicide prosecutor. "If I were the prosecutor, it would certainly be Exhibit A that he did not suffer any major injury as a result of a confrontation with Trayvon Martin."

Zimmerman attorney Craig Sonner said on NBC's "Today" show that the footage appears to support his client's story in some respects.

"It's a very grainy video. ... However, if you watch, you'll see one of the officers, as he's walking in, looking at something on the back of his head," Sonner said. "Clearly the report shows he was cleaned up before he was taken in the squad car."

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in the town of Sanford, told police he shot the 17-year-old Martin after the young man punched him in the nose, knocked him down and repeatedly slammed his head against a sidewalk.

The Sanford Police Department video begins at 7:52 p.m., about 35 minutes after the shooting, as Zimmerman arrives at the station. It shows Zimmerman's head and face as he gets out of a police car. There is no sound on the video.

There is no obvious wound on his head or blood on his clothing, and there are no indications of a broken nose ? which Zimmerman's lawyer has insisted he suffered. He walks briskly, smoothly and unassisted.

"The explanation he is relying on is that there was a physical altercation," said Kendall Coffey, former U.S. attorney in Miami. "The intensity of the physical conflict is critical to his self-defense claim."

Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the Martin family, said the footage directly contradicts Zimmerman's story: "There are no marks on his face. There is no blood on his face. It's not like he's dazed or he has been injured."

Yet Ron Martinelli, founder of a California forensic consulting firm, said that Zimmerman was probably cleaned up when he was treated by paramedics at the scene and that in many cases there is no significant visual evidence of an injury.

"It really depends on how did the head strike the concrete? Did he get hit straight on in the face? Did he get hit with a fist or a backhand?" Martinelli said. "The video proves absolutely nothing."

Investigators have not released any paramedic or hospital records on the gunman. The video, as well as a photo that the Orlando Sentinel identifies as being of Zimmerman, show a slim man, a sharp contrast from the widely used 2005 booking photo from an arrest in Miami Dade County.

The police report said that Zimmerman was found bleeding from the nose and the back of his head, and his back was wet and covered in grass, as if he had been lying on the ground. He was given first aid at the scene. According to his lawyer, he also went to the hospital the next day.

Zimmerman, whose mother is Hispanic and whose father is white, has not been arrested, despite demands from black leaders and others that he be charged with murder or manslaughter. But a special prosecutor appointed by the governor is investigating, along with state and federal authorities.

David O. Markus, a prominent Miami defense attorney, said that an actual fight does not need to take place for someone to claim self-defense under Florida's "stand your ground" law, which gives wide leeway to use deadly force and eliminates a person's duty to retreat in the face of danger.

The video is yet another forensic challenge for investigators trying to unravel the case. Other key pieces of evidence include:

?The 911 call made by a woman who told a police dispatcher she could hear someone screaming for help, followed by a gunshot. The screaming voice can also be heard on the recording. Zimmerman told investigators it is his voice, but Martin's parents believe it is their son's. Martinelli said that investigators could do voice comparisons but that screaming is difficult to duplicate and match.

?A 911 call made by Zimmerman in which, to some people, he seemed to utter a racial slur while following Martin in his SUV. The raw recording is far from definitive. But recordings can be enhanced, and if Zimmerman did utter a slur, that could be evidence of racial bias and lead to federal hate-crime charges.

? The autopsy report, which has not been released. That could shed light on whether the angle of the bullet wound in Martin's body is consistent with Zimmerman's account of the confrontation.

Secured home equity loans rates are at their most competitive level for many a year in the UK. With the increase in home prices over the last 10 years or so, positive home equity has become a major player when it comes to personal finance. Today, home equity of between ?100,000 and ?200,000 is not unusual, especially amongst home buyers who purchased property when prices were at their lowest in 1995 / 1996.

Secured home equity loan rates vary between loan providers. On average, current home equity loan rates are between 6% to 9%, however if you apply for a home equity loan with your existing home loan provider, you may be able to secure additional borrowing on home equity at better rates. Additionally, if you have paid off your first mortgage and then want to borrow against the equity in your home ? which could be the full value of your home if you have no other loan secured against it ? then you will have an increased chance of obtaining preferential rates on the loan.

Why the difference in secured home equity loan rates?

Secured home equity loan rates are generally determined by the risk that the lender is taking. If a home owner is still paying off their first mortgage, a home equity loan will be seen as a second-charge on the property. This means that should the home owner default on repayments to the point that the property is repossessed, the lender of the first mortgage will claim back funds first before the lender of the second-charge equity home loan gets a look in.

When a home is repossessed it is normally sold at auction by a representative of the first loan company in order to recoup the loan extended to the original home owner. Homes at auction can be sold substantially under their market value, depending upon the amount of loan that is outstanding against the first mortgage. It is therefore possible that a home at auction may not fully recapture the total amount of debt outstanding on it, leaving the lender of the second-charge home equity loan in a position of not fully recovering the equity loan.

Given this potential scenario a home equity loan is a bigger risk for a lender to take, and therefore incurs higher repayment rates than a first mortgage loan. From the borrower?s perspective though, a home equity loan provides great value as there are very few other loan products available on the market that offer rates as competitive as secured home equity loans. A secured home equity loan is one of the cheapest ways to secure additional borrowing when you already have a mortgage.

HBT: Mariners take Game 1 of 2012

Mariners 3, A?s 1: Opening Morning! ?Gotta say, for all of my bitching about this yesterday, it was kind of nice to wake up at 5:52 AM, roll over, fire up the laptop and watch some baseball. At least until my kids woke up. Then I had to take precious time away from the game to tell them that breakfast will be later and to go play video games because Daddy is watching baseball. ?My parenting is already in midseason form.

As for the baseball: it was pretty classic Seattle Mariners for a while as Felix Hernandez just didn?t know how to win, giving up one run on five hits while striking out six in eight innings. He should just pitch to the score more or something. ?Brandon McCarthy was good himself, giving up one run ? a Dustin Ackley homer ? and a boatload of grounders in seven innings. ?Some jokers were saying that the M?s and A?s would give us a 0-0 game for 19 innings. Nonsense. But for a while it felt like it would be 1-1 that long.

Dustin Ackley struck again in extras, singling in Brendan Ryan in the 11th. ?Ichiro added some insurance, knocking in Ackley on his fourth single of the game. ?Just Ichiro being Ichiro. Home cookin?, yo.

We do this again tomorrow morning. Then some time off. Then back next week. ?But hey, baseball.

Mass Audubon, New England?s largest conservation organization and a leader in nature-based education for more than 60 years, this month debuts a new, easy-to-use online program catalog for teachers, science coordinators, administrators and others looking for educational enrichment programs and field trips.

The programs?easily searchable by grade, topic, and framework? align with Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education curriculum frameworks. The online catalog provides detailed information on lessons conducted by Mass Audubon?s educators. Anti-smoking efforts save 800,000 US lives: study

Higher taxes on cigarettes, limits on selling to kids and campaigns to educate people on the dangers of smoking have saved nearly 800,000 lives, according to a US study released Wednesday.

The research is based on scientific models that counted how many people smoked up until 1970 and projected how many would have died of lung cancer between 1975 and 2000 if not for a concerted US effort to cut back.

"This is the first attempt to quantify the impact of changes in smoking behaviors on lung cancer mortality based on detailed reconstruction of cigarette smoking histories," said lead author Suresh Moolgavkar of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

"The methods that were developed as a part of this research should prove to be invaluable to other researchers investigating the adverse health impacts of cigarette smoking."

If everyone had quit smoking after the Surgeon General's 1964 report that first warned of the hazards of cigarettes, 2.5 million lung cancer deaths could have been avoided, said the study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

But since that did not happen, of course, there were more than two million deaths among men from lung cancer and more than a million among women from 1975 to 2000.

Tobacco control efforts averted 550,000 lung cancer deaths among men and 240,000 among women during that span, said the study, funded by the National Cancer Institute.

The study only extended to 2000 because the researchers lacked detailed data for subsequent years at the time when the study first began, the study authors said.

However, more can be done, said co-author Eric Feuer, chief of the National Cancer Institute's Statistical Methodology and Applications Branch.

"An overwhelming majority of lung cancer deaths can be prevented by eliminating cigarette smoking," said Feuer.

"The progress that has been made by tobacco control programs and policies in reducing lung cancer deaths represents about a third of the progress that could have been made if all cigarette smoking had ceased in 1965."

A total of 20.6 percent of the US population currently smokes, including nearly four million youths, according to the latest government data.

In the face of a faltering European economy, France?s President Nicolas Sarkozy has proposed a new tax to yield some additional revenue, an unprecedented move for the conservative French leader.? The ?Financial Transaction Tax? would affect financial institutions? transactions on a day-to-day basis, returning some of that money to the government.? While European economists are divided on this issue, American economists are wondering if a similar tax could help rein in some of the unbridled Wall Street trading occurring in the United States.? If support for a Financial Transaction Tax gains traction in Europe, there is hope that such a tax could alleviate some of the problems that caused the massive financial collapse in the U.S. ?The collapse of 2008 decimated retirement accounts,? says Phil Cannella, noted retiree advocate and founder and CEO of Retirement Media, Inc. ?People may have different feelings about different solutions, but it?s good to see leaders exploring ways of preventing catastrophe for millions of blameless investors.?

The European Union?s (E.U.?s) executive body, the European Commission, has suggested the tax could raise as much as 55 billion Euros ($71 billion) each year.

In Europe, Sarkozy has said France will push to implement this tax, even if it is the only Eurozone country to do so, saying, ?If France waits for others to tax finance, then finance will never be taxed.?? Of course Sarkozy has also stated that he would like to gain the support of other European countries, in order to prevent France from suffering an economic disadvantage after the tax is implemented.? Namely, France?s economy could further decline as financial institutions set up shop in other Eurozone countries where financial transactions are not taxed.

Some European leaders, like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, have come out in support of the new tax, while others, like British Prime Minister David Cameron, feel it will only work if implemented by every world economic power simultaneously. .? Of course, that prospect seems unlikely and Sarkozy is now attempting to drum up support from other European nations.? The debate will continue, and until such a tax is implemented, it will be difficult to predict whether it will help or harm that nation?s economy.

Could a Financial Transaction Tax help the United States overcome its economic difficulties?? It is possible that such a tax could generate revenue while at the same time discouraging some of the high-frequency and speculative trading that created the financial meltdown.? On the other hand, the U.S. could be at a disadvantage in the global economy if other countries do not adopt similar taxes.? Similar to the situation in Europe, American economists worry the tax could threaten the United States? status as a trading powerhouse, and may cause financial institutions to move to countries with no Financial Transaction Tax.? Chemotherapy is a word that strikes fear into most of our hearts. We?ve seen the movies and heard such horrible stories about undergoing this difficult treatment for a disease that could very well kill us. I underwent chemo for breast cancer and know that, in some cases, the cancer isn?t hard ? it isn?t painful ? it doesn?t make us sick. That?s the case for most of us who have breast cancer, but don?t have distant metastases. But then, they say we need to do chemo and we know we?ll feel that.

Although chemo drugs haven?t changed that much, and they?re still terribly hard on our bodies, the management drugs have changed a lot. Chemotherapy, for many of us, isn?t the show-stopper we thought it would be. Of course, each of us is different and the chemo drugs affect each of us in different ways, but, for the most part, chemo is definitely doable.

My breast cancer was Stage IIIa, with a 5.8 cm tumor, 8 of 10 lymph nodes positive, and I was only 39 years old. That bought me a ticket for the chemo ride. And I was scared out of my wits. But, I found an online breast cancer support group, at WebMD, and those women told me everything to expect and more. I went through four rounds of adriamycin and cytoxan. Both of them are some pretty stout breast cancer chemo drugs. After that, I did a controversial treatment that involved extremely high doses of cytoxan, taxol, and cisplatin, so I learned quite a bit about surviving chemotherapy.

First of all, I would highly recommend getting a port. This is a line that goes into a vein in your chest, the entrance to which sits just under your skin, right below your collarbone. It requires a quick surgery to put it in but, if you?re having a mastectomy for your breast cancer, you can get the chemo port put in at the same time. If you choose not to do that, you?ll have to get your chemo treatments through your veins and chemo is really hard on your veins. This means that you will, most likely, have to endure multiple attempts for them to find a vein, as time goes by. With the port, it?s already in a vein, so all they have to do is stick the needle into the port to access it. If you find this uncomfortable, there is a cream they can give you called Emla cream. One of the first things I learned was to tell them the moment I was uncomfortable. It?s all fixable. You?ll put the Emla cream on a bit before you have to have your port accessed and it?ll numb your skin.

Most breast cancer chemotherapy drugs will cause your hair to fall out. This is because chemo kills the rapidly dividing cells in your body. Your mucous areas and hair follicles are affected for this reason. That?s why you may have nausea or develop mouth or throat sores. Again, all this sounds scary, but is totally manageable. Since you will probably be losing your hair, which can be quite traumatic, I would advise going wig or hat shopping before you even get your first chemo. Take a girlfriend with you and be adventurous. Try on different styles, and even colors. If you?ve always wanted to be a blonde, now?s your chance! Make a day of it and have fun with it. Goodness knows, you have to look for that silver lining every chance you get. Also, make sure to have your nausea med prescription filled before you go so you?ll have it waiting for you if you need it at home. You may be pretty tired, afterward, so don?t wait till then to get those meds.

On your first chemo day, they will probably give you some steroids, intravenously or through your port, to help with the nausea. This may make you hungry; it sure did for me! But, I would recommend you don?t eat your favorite food on chemo day. Chemo is manageable, but after you?re all done, you may find that you have associations. For example, I used to love the cucumber melon fragrance when I was going through chemo. I had cucumber melon everything! But, to this day, the smell of cucumber melon makes my stomach do a little somersault because it reminds me of such an unpleasant time in my life. The same can happen with food. I still can?t look a chicken burrito in the eye! But, I?m sure glad I didn?t eat a taco because I would?ve hated for that to be ruined for me!

Many breast cancer chemo drugs are hard on your bladder, so be sure to drink, drink, drink. If you don?t feel like drinking water, then broth, jello, or even popsicles will help. Since you?ve gotten your nausea meds all filled in advance, be sure to take them as prescribed, whether you think you need them or not. Chemo nausea isn?t just any kind of nausea and it?s much easier to stay ahead of it than to try to fix it once it occurs. If you do happen to get nauseated, and I can?t stress this enough, call your doctor!!! There are many, many nausea meds and you do not have to feel sick just because you?re doing chemo. Once they find the right drug for you, it will be so much easier. So, do not suffer this in silence! The same applies for if you get sores in your mouth or throat.

You will be tired from this treatment. Most of us get more tired as the treatments progress because they make our white blood cell counts drop really low. Because of this, it?s a good idea to keep some Purell, or something similar, with you all the time for use when you?ve had to touch, for example, public restroom door handles. Your risk of infection will be much higher during this time.

If you lose your hair, it will typically happen in 10-14 days after your first chemo treatment. If you have long hair, you might want to cut it short in preparation. I know I felt so out of control of everything, during that time. When your hair comes out, it lets go quickly and in large clumps, getting all over your pillow and clogging your drain. For many women, that is more traumatic than even losing a breast. So, I figured that was the one thing I could control about this whole breast cancer thing ? when my hair came out. I cut it really short, beforehand and, when it started to let go, I had my husband get the clippers and shave my head. My daughter helped and we did a little Mohawk and stripe action first!

That was my way of shaking my fist at this cancer ? it might take my breasts, and it might take my hair for a while, but I beat it to the punch! It was my way of saying, ?You cannot take my spirit!? You can do the same thing. Your breast cancer does not define you. It is but a speed bump in the course of your life. Strap on your gloves and step into the ring. This chemo is your biggest punch. Your spirit is your own and that breast cancer can?t touch it!

Stacked and potential story-filled NCAA Tournament path awaits UK

Having flown back to Lexington during the NCAA Selection Show, some of the players already had an idea of where they were going, who they were facing and some of the potential matchups that could lay down the road.

And yet for many of them, this was the first time to see their team show up Selection Sunday, and for all of them, it was their first chance to see Kentucky as the No. 1 overall seed.

But when the Cats watched the recording of the Selection Show at John Calipari's house Sunday evening, huddled on couches as cameras flashed and reporters watched their every move, not a single one of them budged.

There was no applause, few smiles and no cheering. Some never said a word.

They expected to be the No. 1 overall seed, and they expected a tough draw filled with potential story lines along every step to the Final Four.

"I keep getting everybody saying we got the toughest region, but that's what was expected," Coach Cal said. "I'm happy we're not playing on Tuesday. I thought they may try to do that. The first game will be hard. The second game will be like a war. If you're lucky enough to move on from there, it's one team after another. So they stacked the region and that's OK. We've played all comers."

Kentucky, which lost earlier Sunday in the Southeastern Conference Tournament championship to Vanderbilt, finished the regular season 32-2. As the top overall seed, UK will play the winner of Mississippi Valley State and Western Kentucky on Thursday in the South Region. That second-round game in the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville will be played at 6:50 p.m. on TBS.

Regardless of the opponent, it will be must-see TV for Kentucky fans, even for a 1-16 matchup. Mississippi Valley State is coached by Kentucky "Unforgettable" Sean Woods, whose shot was nearly "the shot" before Christian Laettener's buzzer beater in the 1992 Elite Eight. Should Western Kentucky win, the obvious in-state rival exist, not to mention the Cats haven't played the Hilltoppers since losing to them during the 2001-02 season.

If UK gets out of its first game - and it would be history if the Cats didn't considering no 16 seed has ever defeated a 1 - the story lines continue.

No. 9 seed Iowa State features forward Royce White, who reportedly almost transferred to Kentucky from Minnesota. Should the Cats get No. 8 seed Connecticut, it will be a rematch of last year's Final Four game.

From there, it gets even more interesting. UK's lone regular-season loss, Indiana, is a potential Sweet 16 opponent, which Coach Cal has been telling his good friend and Indiana coach Tom Crean would happen for the last few weeks.

"I said, 'We'll be playing. You watch. You will be playing against us,' " Calipari told Crean. "I think last year I picked West Virginia. Did I not? I've been wrong before. I think it was '78."

And then, if UK can make it all the way to the Elite Eight, a potential date with Duke exists on the 20-year anniversary of what some call the greatest game ever played.

Coach Cal said he doesn't pay attention to the story lines, but he isn't surprised at what the NCAA selection committee drew up for his team.

"The only thing I was happy (about) was I heard they were trying to get an exemption for the (Miami) Heat to be the second seed in our bracket and they weren't allowed to that so they couldn't put them in there too," Calipari said facetiously.

At the end of the day, made-for-TV story lines or not, Calipari said it's about matchups, and with a team he really likes, he likes his chances.

"Seed matters," Coach Cal said. "I know because I've done this. When someone says it doesn't matter where you're seeded, it matters. The matchups matter because there are some that get that path and then there is another guy that's in the foxhole, bazooka shots coming at them."

Some of the players were particularly pleased to see Indiana as a possible opponent down the road. Up until Sunday's loss to Vanderbilt, the buzzer beater in Bloomington, Ind., was the only heartbreak they've known all season.

"I told my teammates I want to play them," Indiana native Marquis Teague said. "That would be a great game for us. We would love to get them again."

Others were just happy to see the field and put Sunday's loss behind them.

"We're still upset about the loss today," senior Darius Miller said. "We're not really over it. Hopefully we use it to motivate us."

Kentucky will be making its 52nd NCAA Tournament appearance and third straight under Calipari. UK leads the NCAA with 105 tournament wins, and Coach Cal is 32-13 in the Big Dance, including three Final Four berths.

But UK's first two games will have a different feel to them as the Cats will head just an hour up Interstate 64 to play in Louisville. It's only the program's third visit to the Derby City and first since 1961.

Tickets for the first- and second-round games in Louisville are already sold out with the exception of all-session packages. No one doubts that the majority of those tickets were snatched up by Big Blue fans.

"It should be real good," sophomore forward Terrence Jones said. "Our fans travel with us wherever we go. Just to make it easier on us and them down the street should make it a real good outcome for us."

However, the Cats dismissed the notion that the bracket's No. 1 overall seed and likely home-court advantage makes them the favorite to win the championship.

"This is the best of the best right here," Miller said. "Every team has a chance. We've got to come out and do our part to make sure we have a chance at the end."

A new study hints at how important that line of defense is in fostering a livable planet.

During a bout of turbulence in the solar wind in 2008, researchers found that Mars lost oxygen atoms in its atmosphere 10 times faster than did Earth ? an observation the team attributes at least in part to the relative strength of each planet's magnetic field.

It marks the first time researchers have measured the effects of the solar wind on two planets at the same time and under the same windy conditions, and there is hope that the study can be extended to Venus, which has no magnetic field at all.

On one level, the results aren't surprising, the researchers acknowledge. Scientists have long thought that the presence of a natural, magnetic deflector shield would help a planet retain an atmosphere. This is seen as one reason Mars, with a magnetic field one-tenth as strong as Earth's, has such a comparatively tenuous atmosphere.

Yet during the past few years, discoveries involving the Earth's relatively expansive magnetosphere ? the region of space around the planet that falls under the influence of its magnetic field ? have cast some doubt on details of this generally accepted idea, the researchers say.

Some studies have suggested that the Earth's magnetosphere may be more efficient at transferring energy from the solar wind to the upper atmosphere than on smaller planets with weaker, smaller magnetospheres. This would render Earth's field a less-effective windbreak than previously thought.

By measuring the effect of the same solar-wind conditions on two planets at the same time, researchers can better quantify the shielding effect, as well as make comparisons to see how shield efficiency might change with the size of the magnetosphere.

The team, led by Yong Wei, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany,?took advantage of a conjunction between Mars, Earth, and the sun in 2008. Mars and Earth lined up on the same side of the sun, an event that occurs roughly every 25 months. That put both planets in the same general solar-wind environment.

Instruments aboard the European Space Agency's Mars Express orbiter, and on a flotilla of four ESA craft that study how the sun affects the near-Earth environment, provided data on the loss of oxygen ions from each planet's upper atmosphere.

When a particularly turbulent region of the solar wind hit each planet, the additional rate of oxygen loss at Mars was 10 times higher than at Earth.?

With another ESA orbiter circling Venus and able to make measurements similar to Mars Express and the ESA's near-Earth flotilla, the team is looking forward to a current favorable alignment between the sun, Earth, Mars, and Venus to make additional measurements and comparisons.

This alignment comes as the sun is nearing the peak of its 11-year sunspot cycle, when eruptions like the coronal-mass ejection and solar flares this week happen most frequently. The team hopes to measure the effect these larger, far more energetic blasts of charged particles have on the erosion of atmospheres.

Venus will make an interesting addition to the lineup. It's about as big as Earth, with a far thicker atmosphere, but no magnetic field.

The results of the Mars-Earth comparison are being published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research.
