If the deficit goes down too fast, unemployment goes up

If the Bush tax cuts expire on schedule,? the drag to the still-too-weak economy from the reduction in after-tax income would mean less buying power for a lot of families and that would send the unemployment rate back up past 9 percent.

The CBO budget update from the other day makes a good, simple point, one ignored by the austerity merchants: if we try to get rid of the deficit too quickly, we will make the jobless situation worse.

The CBO estimates the path of the deficit if all the Bush tax cuts went bye-bye on schedule at the end of this year (current law baseline; the alternative minimum tax would also whack a lot more middle-income people).? Taxes would go up and the deficit would go down.? But the drag to the still-too-weak economy from the reduction in after-tax income would mean less buying power for a lot of families and that would send the unemployment rate back up past 9% in their model by 2013.

This is very unlikely to happen. ?The President plans to let the sun set on the highend tax cuts at the end of this year, while preserving those for households with incomes under $250K.? The highend cuts represent about a quarter of the whole package and they target those who are less income constrained to start with, so I wouldn?t expect them to have anywhere near the effect of the full sunset.

The Bush tax cuts are the main driver of the medium term budget deficit and ultimately, they should all phase out. ?But we need to be mindful of the timing.

Pointers When Coming Up With A Diet Plan at aptitudecms

February 3rd, 2012 by John

Diet modifications is necessary to manage ones weight. But how does one develop a diet plan? Firstly, you should set your fitness goals, that is if you want to lose, maintain, or gain weight. As with any goals, establishing your fitness targets need to be sensible, specific, and measurable. The next step would be to evaluate a diet program if it is the right one for your needs and lifestyle. Ensure that the diet you intend to use will supply you with the right amount of energy. Your body needs calories to function, and making adjustments to your calorie intake will help you achieve your fitness objectives. By now, you are probably thinking of the question how many calories should I eat a day?

This question is an interesting one as energy needs differ among individuals. One of these factors include age, how fast our metabolism is, and the types of activities you do on a daily basis. Running a quick search on the Web using how many calories should I eat as key phrase will generate a number of links to websites that contain calorie calculation tools. These tools are designed according to the Harris-Benedict principle and thus will require you to key in your age, weight, height, and activity levels. These applications are uncomplicated and very helpful. Some of these diet and health websites do more than just answer your question of how many calories should I eat, it will also give you information as to how many hours you need to allot for exercise in order to lose or maintain your weight.

After finding the answer to your query of how many calories should I eat a day, come up with a list of meals you want to have for the week. Make sure to do this in advance to ensure that you will be eating healthy for the whole week. At the same time, planning ahead will keep your diet plan within budget. Make sure to include fruits, vegetables, and foods that are rich in fiber in your diet.

It is also recommended that you use a diet journal. By counting your calories, you will be able to adhere to your diet more effectively. A research done in 2008 shows that those who follow this practice were able to shed twice as more pounds in comparison to those who do not keep food diaries. There are numerous diet journal software and websites that provide calorie information of common food items.

Some people who go on a diet sometimes make the mistake of abruptly and greatly reducing their caloric intake. Extremely low-calorie diets can bring about a number of health issues which include gallstone formation, loss of muscle mass, and even mood disorders.

Women, Food, Drugs and Addictions: Identifying the Missing Piece ...

By Robert Weiss LCSW, CSAT-S

Betty?s Story

Betty has been referred into treatment for a binge eating disorder (BED) by her long-time psychotherapist, who sees out-of-control patterns emerging that need to be addressed outside of the outpatient frame. Betty arrives 75 pounds overweight and has a number of health problems, but with the right combination of therapy and self-care she starts looking and feeling better than ever.

Once home and attending support groups and meetings, Betty finds that men are now taking note of her ?improved look.? Betty finds herself both feeling sexy and wanting to be seen. So out she goes, looking for ?the one? but settling instead for a lot of romantic attention and casual sex.

Eventually she finds ?the one? and settles down into a committed relationship. Sadly, within a few short months of playing house Betty begins to gain weight and within 18 months, Betty has gained back 60 pounds, but also loses her new romantic partner who walks out the door not having gotten the woman he bargained for. This pattern plays out not once or twice, but nearly every time Betty gets into a serious relationship. It has never been identified.

Betty unconsciously uses her physical size to control relationship intimacy. Early on, she works hard at the gym and Weight Watchers to become what she believes ? and our culture tells her ? is desirable, as she isn?t threatened by emotionally distant (but sexually intense) relationships. When she inevitably finds someone with whom she wishes to become more intimate, Betty begins to abuse food, gain weight, and literally distance herself from her partner and her desired goal of long-term intimacy.

It?s All About Lucy

Lucy is obsessed with her looks. Her steady diet of ?diet pills? and amphetamines keeps her moody, but slim. Thanks to the magic of plastic surgery and daily cycling and yoga, her body is firm, her lips are perfectly pouty, and there isn?t a fine line or wrinkle in sight. Always ready to mingle no matter where she is, especially when she?s had a few drinks, Lucy does whatever it takes to ?get? Mr. Right, even if it means starving or purging to drop a few pounds.

Despite her investment of time and attention (not to mention the $45,000 surgery bill), Lucy sees imperfection everywhere. The intense devoted attention that wrings out of the men she attracts, whether via casual sex or affairs with married men, distracts her long enough to feel really good about herself ? at least for a while.

Lucy uses her figure and appearance to attract men who she believes will complete her and make her feel whole. If she receives treatment that involves drug/alcohol, eating and sex/relationship disorders, she may come to realize how closely tied her repeated failed relationships have been to disordered self-image, eating and depression.

What Is the Common Thread?

Although both Betty and Lucy may arrive in treatment for eating disorder issues, drug abuse and/or mood problems, both also have profound adult sex, intimacy and relationship concerns that need to be addressed, but in treatment settings can all too often be overlooked.

It is not unusual for women with attachment or early trauma-related problems to be identified and treated for eating disorders and chemical dependency. In cases where there is repeated relapse it may well be the case that adult intimacy issues simply have not been identified. The fact is that nearly 50 percent of those women receiving treatment for sexual disorders also report suffering from an identifiable eating disorder.

Although the connections between eating disorders and sex, love and relationship addictions in women have not been adequately researched, the experience of many addiction treatment professionals is that cross-addictions and co-morbidity are common. If adult sex and relationship behavior patterns aren?t properly assessed while these women are being treated for other concerns, these unidentified issues can manifest in post-treatment eating disorder and substance abuse relapse along with unresolved lifelong problems with sex and relationships.

'Shore' baby on the way? Forget about it!

Despite rumors to the contrary, a rep for Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi insists the reality star isn't pregnant.

By Gina Serpe and Marc Malkin, E! Online

Lesson for the kids: always practice safe smooshing.

That, supposedly, is something that Jersey Shore guidette Snooki failed to do, as Star magazine is breathlessly reporting that the reality starlet is pregnant!

The 24-year-old certainly seems to be in a stable relationship with her boyfriend of a year, Jionni LaValle, but is Snooki really mother material?

Forget GTL--this news is more like OMG! That is, if it's true. So is Snooki readying herself for a Shore leave and expecting a bambino of her own? This rumor is...

MORE: Missed the latest Jersey Shore? Catch up with our recap!

So false!

Snooki's rep tells E! News that there is no truth to the rumors and that the MTV star is not pregnant.

The tabloid seemed to pin the rumor on the fact that Snooki was telling friends she had a "big announcement" coming soon. Well, it seems like her baby may have been simply of the professional variety, possibly to do with her "Jersey Shore" spinoff with pal JWoww.

PHOTOS: Jersey Shore Hits Hollywood

Just this week, it emerged that the Hoboken mayor rejected the production company's request for a permit to film in the city. Talk about a baby.

So there's no baby on the way for now, but the reality star has said she wants to be a mom one day. Do you think the party-loving Princess of Poughkeepsie is cut out for diaper duty and everything else that comes with it? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Cuba says imports from US off sharply in 2010 (AP)

HAVANA ? Cuban imports from the United States fell sharply in 2010 while the country increasingly turned to trade with ally Venezuela, according to newly released government statistics.

The government also announced that agricultural food prices rose 20 percent last year in part due to shorter supply, even as authorities try to stimulate productivity with agrarian and economic reforms.

Cuba's National Statistics Office said the island imported $410 million worth of goods from the U.S. in 2010, mostly food products. That was down from $645 million the previous year and about $1 billion in 2008.

The nearly 50-year-old U.S. trade embargo outlaws most U.S. commerce with Cuba, but it allows some things like agricultural goods and medicine to be sold to the island.

Cuba has said in the past that it would be buying less from the United States, saying the embargo's requirement that the transactions be done in cash was too restrictive. Increasingly it has turned to sources like China, Vietnam and Brazil in search of better terms.

The 2010 numbers on external trade released this week had not been previously announced, and 2011 figures are not available.

The document said trade with Venezuela, which has become Cuba's main commercial partner under President Hugo Chavez, topped $6 billion in 2010, nearly double the $3.4 billion registered the year before.

Venezuela provides about 100,000 barrels of oil a day to Cuba on beneficial terms and receives doctors and technical advisers from Cuba.

China was Cuba's second-largest partner in 2010 with $1.9 billion in trade, according to the report, followed by Canada, Spain, Brazil and the Netherlands.

The United States ranked seventh.

Cuba said exports increased from $3.1 billion in 2009 to $4.6 billion in 2010.

So did imports, from $9.6 billion to $10.6 billion. Fuel and food topped the list of goods Cuba purchased.

The National Statistics Office also said in a different report that prices for goods in agricultural markets rose 19.8 percent last year, led by crops like citrus, coconut, mango and melon.

The Cuban government has acknowledged that productivity is a problem on the island, forcing it to resort to food imports it can ill-afford ? a total of $1.5 billion in 2010, according to the Statistics Office.

As part of a package of economic reforms, President Raul Castro has made agricultural changes including handing over fallow state-run land to independent growers and co-ops, and extending credits for farm equipment and improvements and

He frequently stressed the need for homegrown products to substitute for imports.

Giants D-line a key vs Brady in Super Bowl

(AP) ? The Giants defense will do everything it can to pressure Tom Brady, and the way the front four has been playing lately it's more a matter of what happens when the pass rush closes in on the Patriots quarterback.

"I think it starts with hitting him, even when you don't actually get sacks, just keeping people around him so he can't step up," defensive end Justin Tuck said Tuesday at media day. "I think he gets a little frustrated when he has to go to his second or third receivers. You can kind of confuse him sometimes with our coverage. I think there are a lot of things that can get him rattled, but it just seems like not too many people are able to do that."

The Giants have the people to make it happen in Sunday's Super Bowl. In beating the Patriots four years ago in the NFL title game, the Giants sacked Brady five times, hit him nine other times and forced a fumble in their 17-14 upset.

In turning around their season with a five-game winning streak to make it to Indianapolis, the Giants (12-7) have allowed a total of 67 points, 13.4 per game, and produced 20 sacks with no opposing quarterback throwing for more than 251 yards ? including Aaron Rodgers of the Packers.

"To be honest, I think our confidence is very high," said second-year defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who led the Giants with 16? sacks in the regular season. "We know what we have to do and what's at stake. This is our last game, and we're in the Super Bowl. We have to go out and give it our all."

In their 24-20 win over the Patriots in early November, the Giants sacked Brady twice and had two interceptions. One sack led to a fumble recovery that set up a score.

"We did some things that disrupted his timing," defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said. "We caused him to stay jittery in the pocket. Hopefully we can do that again."

A lot of changed since that game. Tuck was playing hurt at the time. Osi Umenyiora was still not healthy after missing the start of the season with a knee injury and the defense was still giving up too many big plays.

Now, everyone on the defense is healthy. The secondary is covering receivers and the line has finally meshed and is playing its best.

Umenyiora has no doubt the Giants will get to Brady.

"They're going to definitely do some things to keep us off of him, max protections, short throws, quick throws, but they can only do that for so long," Umenyiora said. "Whenever we have opportunities where he does hold the ball, we're going to have to get to the quarterback."

Center Dan Connolly said the Patriots need to keep Brady upright.

"Keeping him from being hit is our No. 1 goal," Connolly said. "If he can stand back there and do his job, we'll be OK."

Seven-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman and current NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp says the Patriots better establish a running game if Brady is to be successful.

"There is no way they can drop Tom Brady back 40 times and expose him to this rush," Sapp said. "Whoever controls the line of scrimmage wins this ballgame. It's always that simple. If New England can get a run game going, we have a ballgame, If they expose him to the rush when it's third-and-6, third-and-7 and third-and-8, look out. You can't let a defensive lineman pin your ears back."

And once the Giants' line starts getting to the quarterback, it's contagious.

"You know, the adrenaline is pumping," Pierre-Paul said. "You just have to get there, and like a dunk, you've just got to dunk the ball. Once you do it, you just want another one. Like a sack, once you get one sack, you just want more. The guys on my front line, if Osi gets a sack, I want two sacks, because if I get two sacks, Justin Tuck is going to want three sacks."

That's what happened in 2008 when a few of the names were different, with the obvious absence being Michael Strahan.

"This game will not be won off what we did in '07 or what we did earlier this year," Tuck said. "I hope we don't fall into that trap of believing that because that team has won 10 straight. They are playing, I think, better football ? team football ? than they played in '07. But, I think we are playing better team football than we played in '07. It's going to be a fun matchup. It's going to be a fun atmosphere, and I am looking forward to it."
